{How To} S.O.A.P. Your Quiet Time

I’m proud of you.

I really am….. I want YOU to know that.

I’m proud of you for making the commitment this fall to be in God’s Word…..to be reading it each day and applying it to YOUR life……the beautiful life our Lord has given YOU.

Each session I create a study guide that goes along with the verses we are reading, this study guide is to help you interact with God’s Word and learn to dig deeper…. slowing down to really read what God is saying to you that day.

Before we get to far into our fall session, I want to take the time and explain what the S.O.A.P. method is and WHY you should use it during your quiet time.

Why S.O.A.P. it?

It’s one thing to simply read scripture, but when you interact with it, when you learn to slow down to REALLY read it,  suddenly words start popping off the page. By SOAPing your verses you are able to dig deeper into scripture and “see” more than if you simply read the verses and then went on your merry way. Let me encourage you to take the time to S.O.A.P. the daily verses and see for yourself how much more you get out of your daily reading……you’ll be amazed.

What does S.O.A.P. mean?

S- The S stands for Scripture- you physically write out the scripture……you’ll be amazed that what God will reveal to you just by taking the time to slow down and actually write out what you are reading!

O- The O stands for observation- what do you see in the verses that you’re reading. Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you?

A- The A stands for Application- this is when God’s Word becomes personal. What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my own personal life? What changes do I need to make? Is there an action that I need to take?

P- And finally P stands for Prayer. Pray God’s Word back to Him. If He has revealed something to you during this time in His Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life.

Studying God’s Word like this can take as little or as long as you have time to give. Some days it can take just 10 or 15 minutes, other days longer.

How do I S.O.A.P.?

Here is my personal example from yesterday’s verses….

Colossians 1:5-8

S- The faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

O- (Many times I just bullet my observations……what I’m seeing at first glance when looking at the verses)

  • When you combine faith and love, you get hope.
  • We have to remember that our hope is in heaven…….it is yet to come.
  • The gospel is the word of truth.
  • The gospel is continually bearing fruit and growing from the 1st day to the last.
  • It just takes one person to change a whole community…..Epaphras.

A-Something that stood out to me today was how God used one man, Epaphras to change a whole town!!! I was reminded that we are simply called to tell others about Christ……it’s God’s job to spread the gospel….to grow it and have it bear fruit. I felt today’s verses were almost directly spoken to GMG…..“all over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.” Isn’t it fun when God’s Word becomes so alive and speaks directly were we are at?!!!! My prayer today is that all the women involved in this Bible study, over 15,000 now from 60 different countries, will understand God’s grace and have a thirst for His Word.

A quote from my Bible commentary that I wrote in my study guide “God’s Word is not just for our information, it for our transformation.”

P- Dear Lord, please help me to be a “Epapras”…..to tell others about you and then leave the results in your loving hands. Please help me to understand and apply what I have read today to my life personally thereby becoming more and more like you each and every day. Help me to live a life that bears the “fruit” of faith and love…….anchoring my hope in heaven, not here on earth. Help me to remember that the BEST is yet to come!

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

I’ll be honest with you and say there are many days I write on the front and back side of my study guide…..but you don’t have to. Just take it one day at a time, and write as you respond to what God has shown you through His Word.

The most important ingredients in the S.O.A.P. method is YOUR interaction with God’s Word and your APPLICATION of His Word for YOUR life.

I hope this explanation helps you today as you learn to dig deeper into God’s Word.

Women In The Word Wednesdays- Serving As A Family

Mark 10:43-45

“…Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Allow for me to brag just for a second…….:) I LOVE my church! I’m very fortunate to go to a church that is active in equipping their members with resources which aid us in instilling God’s Word and values into our families. Today I’ve included one of many resources that have been created through a ministry at my church called HomePointe. Today I’ve provided a downloadable document on serving with your family as well as a link to where you can find some of HomePointe’s other resources created with your family in mind.

On Friday I’ll share two books you can use with your families to help you come up with ideas and ways to help develop the Gift of Serving.

Women In the Word Wednesday- What I’ve learned in my 12 years of marriage

I married my high school sweetheart and love of my life on July 17th, 1999. I still remember the day I saw him…..I had recently moved to his school and it was during our 8th grade graduation ceremony when I first saw my future husband. He was on stage for getting only A’s all through middle school and I remember thinking, “Wow, that guy is cute and smart….I’m going to have to keep my eye on him when we get to high school!” A few years later and with God’s intervention we finally met, became friends and started dating……all in about a week! Our first double date was with Courtney and her boyfriend (future husband) Keith. By the time the above picture was taken, Dirk and I had dated 5 1/2 years. We started dating our Junior year in high school and continued all through college.

When we first started dating we were both only 17. I feel as though I have grown up with him and I LOVE THAT! Dirk has been with me through my worst of times and best of times. I have sat next to him in high school when he was talking about colleges and dreaming of one day going to medical school. And I have continued to sit next to him, supporting him, encouraging him all the way through to completion of his dream. I love our history together. I loved every step of the process. There were of course years that were hard, when we didn’t see each other very much, when we didn’t have any money, when we were both stressed and tired but we were working toward a common goal and we were a team and you want to know something….it was all worth it. One important lesson that I learned those years when Dirk was in medical school and residency was …..don’t wish them away. Live your life NOW! Enjoy the time God has given you now. God has a purpose in every stage of your life. Don’t wish your life away but enjoy where God has you. It’s the journey of life that’s the most fun. The times of not knowing God’s plan but learning to trust Him…together are so valuable. It’s during the journey of life that God continues to mold each of you together, during the times of disappointments and times of celebrations. During life’s ups and downs, God is constantly at work making each of you look more like His Son.

As I sit here tonight thinking over the years we have spent together, now with two sweet daughters and another one coming next month, I am so thankful to my Lord for giving me such a wonderful man to share my life with. I truly feel so unworthy and so thankful at the same time. Our life isn’t perfect and neither are we, but I love seeing where God started us, where He has taken us and I look eagerly to the future with my Lord, my husband and my children.

With all that said, here are a few things that I have learned these past 12 years…

1. Be the type of wife you’d want your son to be married to.

2. Smile at him.

3. Be forgiving.

4. Be direct……but kindly. Men can’t read minds and neither can we.

5. Be excited to see him when he comes home.

6. Allow him to have alone time.

7. Be an encourager.

8. Don’t nag…honestly it doesn’t work and only hurts the relationship.

9.  Give him grace, you aren’t the perfect wife and he isn’t the perfect husband.

10. Pray for him and allow God to work in his life.

11. Remember you are not his Holy Spirit

12. There is only one “Prince Charming” and his name is Jesus…release your husband from the burden of fulfilling all your needs…..he can’t. Only Jesus can.

I read this list to Dirk earlier today and asked him which were his favorite points, his answer was: smiling at him and being excited to see him when he gets home. :)
