My Spiritual Legacy

You never know how extending an invitation can change a family’s course…..today I’d like to share with you a very special story. A story that is near and dear to my heart. This is my spiritual legacy…..

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

I have a story to share with you today, a “Once Upon a Time” kind of story except this story does have a date in which it takes place, the 1960’s and instead of it happening in a land far away….well,it starts out in a small town in rural Indiana. And like all great stories, it starts out with children….two little girls to be exact.

One little girl named Debbie knows about God, she comes from a home where both mom and dad tuck her into bed at night and give her kisses after her prayers.

The other little girl named Diana doesn’t know about God, comes from a home where daddy left and now only her mommy tucks her into bed at night with kisses but no prayers.

Both little girls are friends at school.

Please join me today at MomHeart.Org to read the rest of this story!!! I pray it blesses and encourages you!

Disney, Sea Shells and Easy ways to be intentional with your kids {Link-Up}

My family and I recently had the opportunity to go to Disneyland in California and boy did we have a blast! Seriously one of the best vacations yet! I loved it!

When we got back home, I asked my girls what they wanted to show their friends from our trip…..their response surprised me.

“Our sea shells.”

Your sea shells……but we went to Disney!!! Don’t you want to bring one of the stuff animals you won or don’t you want to show your friends some of the pictures we took of you meeting the princesses and other Disney characters?

“No.”

They wanted to show the sea shells.

“Why the sea shells?” I asked.

“Because you helped us collect them.” Was their response.

We spent a few days at Disneyland…..and enjoyed EVERY minute of it but what really touched my girls hearts was the one day we took a break from Disney and traveled to the beach.

I wanted my girls to see the ocean. I wanted them to see God’s beauty, His power……experience what He created.

In Sally Clarkson’s book, Ministry of Motherhood, she talks about giving our children the Gift of Inspiration.  Her whole book is wonderful and I highly recommend it, but that particular section spoke directly to my heart and I wanted to open the eyes of my children to the awesomeness of their God.

“A child who does not have the opportunity to marvel at the bigness of God, the wonders of his creation, and the reality of his supernatural work will tend to measure the questions about “who God is” according to his or her finite, limited perspective…”

“When we take the opportunity to expose our children to the glory of God displayed in a rainbow or powerful ocean waves or a star-studded night sky, we are helping them understand that there is a Being much bigger than themselves who created the universe and holds it together with his power. “-Sally Clarkson

I wanted my girls to experience their God in a much bigger way.

Being at the ocean does that.

The beauty alone takes your breath away.

The sound of the ocean waves roaring to shore, the soft breeze touching your face and the birds singing above……all testify to God’s reality and greatness.

As we walked the beach picking up sea shells I talked to my girls about how wonderful and powerful our God is. We talked about how beautiful each sea shell was that they picked up. We talked about God’s creativity, about the size of the ocean and the power of the waves……I wanted them to see God in His creation.

I wanted to be intentional and give them an opportunity to experience God in a whole new way. To open their eyes to the bigness of their God.

This week we see from our verses (Proverbs 31:1-9) that King Lemuel’s mother was an intentional woman. She was a mother who was intentional in how she taught her son, teaching him the virtues of a noble wife as she taught him the alphabet,…connecting his learning to something valuable that he would later be able to easily recall.

Using her as an inspiration, here are a few ways we can be intentional with our kids……everyday

  • Write “I think you’re amazing because...” notes in their lunch boxes, their rooms, their cars.
  • Go out on a special date with them….
  • Send them encouraging text messages
  • Pray together
  • Read the bible together….and discuss what you read
  • Read books together
  • Serve together
  • Intentionally slow down……look them in the eyes and tell them how much you love them
  • Give them a hug
  • Talk with them and rub their backs as you do……my girls love that!
  • Laugh with them
  • Smile at them

Being intentional is about turning off the TV, not answering the phone or the emails, the tweets or the Facebook comments, and really seeing your family. Giving them undivided time and attention. It’s talking with them over a meal. It’s asking them questions, doing things together like coloring, drawing, tickling and laughing together. Not necessarily spending money, but spending time together………that’s what’s truly priceless.

Being intentional is about really seeing them and purposefully investing in their lives.

What are some ways that you are intentional with your kids? I believe we learn best from one another! I’d love to hear your ideas! What would you add to my list? Which ones are your favorite?

Be a Mom Who Rocks The World!

It’s 6:30 in the morning, I’m trying to get my quiet time in BEFORE my girls wake up and I hear, “Mommy, Paige just woke me up!!!” Hello day…….here we gooooooooo……..

The quiet serenity of spending time in God’s Word, conversing with the King of Kings is now replaced with 3 hungry little girls all wanting to be fed, 2 of them telling me about their dreams from the night before…at the same time and each wanting their mommy’s 100% attention! Life as a mom can be crazy!!!! But you know what? I wouldn’t want it any other way!

Motherhood can be hard. It can be exhausting. Some days it takes everything that I have to give….and then some! But the opportunity to raise 3 precious little girls for my Lord’s glory is priceless, even on those days when I feel I have accomplished nothing. But there is such meaning in the mundane.

Do you have a desire to make a difference in our world?

{Week 11} Are you training or exasperating your children? {Giveaway}

I love and wrestle with Ephesians 6:4- “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

I struggle with that verse. I embrace it at times……..desiring to train my children in the instruction of the Lord. And yet other times I exasperate myself wondering if I’m being a “good” mom, a “successful” mom….wanting to correct and train yet not cross the line of exasperating my children. Have you been there too? Are you there now?

Besides the bible, another book God has used tremendously in my life as a mother is Sally Clarkson’s The Ministry of Motherhood.

God has used her book to rock my world with quotes like these…..

“He allowed Peter to fail spectacularly so he would finally understand that grace was the key to serving God and his kingdom. Not by his own strength and courage, but only by God’s constant grace and mercy would Peter be able to deliver Jesus’ message to the world- a message that would then be wrapped in the grace and mercy he had come to know so well.”

“Perfection is not a standard he requires of me as a mother, for his grace extends to me as well as to my children.”

“But instead of just telling them what to do, harshly commanding their allegiance with orders and threats or guilt and manipulative statements, he chose to tie the cords of his heart to theirs with the strong and unbreakable bond of a loving, serving relationship.”

“I realize my love and service to them must come before any of my great words, my teaching and training. My time, my attention, my “soft-tickling”- even when I am tired or have other “important” things on my mind- is what builds our relationship and prepares them to listen to what I have to say.”

I have enjoyed this book so much that last summer Courtney and I chose The Ministry of Motherhood for our GMG summer reading! It truly is wonderful and a MUST READ for every mom who wants to love her children well and train them up in the instruction of the Lord.

So why am I telling you all of this today? For two reasons.

1. Last week Sally launched a new blog called Mom Heart Online. Here’s a little description of it:

Mom Heart Online

The ocean of “mom blogs” on the Internet seems to grow wider and deeper every day. You already know that it is impossible to follow every good blog you find as you surf that ocean. If you did, there wouldn’t be much time left for mothering! So, you are right to want to know what makes Mom Heart Online different. Out of all the wonderful mom blogs wanting and deserving your attention, why should you visit us here? Why is it worth your valuable time to spend time here.

Mom Heart Online is spiritual harbor. We’re here not just to bring you in to stay, but also to send you out to sail. We are a place any mom can come to be encouraged, equipped, and enabled as a mother after God’s heart. We are here to inspire and engage your heart with great content that calls you to a high vision for your life as a mother, to create an online community of moms where you can network and interact with others who share your heart, to train you how to easily start and lead your own Mom Heart Group to continue in life what you find online, and to provide quality and original materials and resources that will fill your heart and mind with life-changing wisdom and truth. That’s why!

I adore Sally’s heart for moms and am honored to be a contributor there (and many of my favorite bloggers are contributors too – Ann Voskamp, Courtney from Women Living Well, Joy, Sarah Mae, Ruth)!! Check out the list of amazing Contributors here.
