Luke 9: Small Gifts, Full Bellies & a {Giveaway}

Week 1A

Hi and welcome to Good Morning Girls! We are so glad you’re joining us!

The story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 is one of my personal favorites. I love how God uses a boy in the midst of 5,000 men, to perform a miracle. Did you ever think about that before? The Bible records there were over 5,000 men (not to mention women and children) at this gathering….but none of the men offer Jesus anything except hungry bellies. Yet in John 6:1-15 we see it is the faith of a child, a boy, who offers all that he had to Jesus.

I love Jesus’s response to this small donation given in faith…He accepts it, takes it, uses it.

Jesus doesn’t laugh at the boy and his small offering. He doesn’t make the boy “clean himself up” before coming to Him and offering his food. Jesus doesn’t question the boy and ask him what qualifications he has in trying to meet this large need, nor does He criticize the boy and ask him if that is all he has. No, Jesus simply accepts the offer, gives thanks for it and begins using what was given to meet the needs that were before Him.

Have you noticed the miracle happens after Jesus gives thanks for the small meal….before the need is met? The 5 loaves and 2 fish couldn’t even come close to meeting the need of these people, yet Jesus gives thanks anyway.

You see, Jesus knows something many of us don’t…there is power in a thankful heart.

I love how the boy gave all that he could give and then left the miracle up to God.

What has God given you to help feed the body of Christ?

Is it talents, money, time or compassion?

Remember, you don’t have to fulfill the whole need…..just give your portion. Give what you already have. Jesus didn’t ask the boy for more food….Jesus used what the boy gave.

GMG is a lot like this story. All the women who make up this amazing ministry do so out of their love for God. We are ALL volunteers. Many of us are moms with children still at home. Our time is valuable to us. And I’m sure if you asked us, we don’t always feel like we have “a lot” of it to give….just “5 loaves and 2 fish”….but we give anyway. We lead our GMG groups with the “extra” time we have. We love on the 5-25 women in our groups. We encourage them, pray for them and help them get into God’s Word….each day. To us it might not seem like a lot, but I can testify to the fact that God is taking our gifts and multiplying them to reach thousands of women around the world!

I think of our translators, many of them are moms with small children at home, yet they have a passion for God’s Word and for their fellow sisters in their countries and so they sacrifice their evenings to translate our documents for us. Small gifts and sacrifices yet when placed in the hands of God, are used to “feed thousands.”

Let me encourage you today to be like this boy, to give Jesus the talents, the gifts, the time, the compassion that He has given you…..even if you don’t feel like its very much, give it to Him anyway and leave the miracle in His hands.

And remember, you don’t have to “it all together” before God can start using you.

We have generations behind us who are hungry for God’s Word and in desperate need for women to put their faith into action and live God’s truth out in flesh and blood, giving them something they can see and model. They need someone to lead them. Are you up for the challenge?

Week 1 Challenge:

Like the boy in Luke 9, what can you give to Jesus this week? It doesn’t have to be big….just a gift given in faith. Maybe its time spent with a hurting friend, a quick meal to a new mom, or a note of encouragement to a struggling child. Pray and ask God to help you see how you can help those in your life this week.

Join us in changing a nation…every dollar counts!

Lately I’ve been praying big…..dreaming big…..and putting myself out there.

You see I DO NOT LIKE to ask for money.

I hate it.

It gets me nervous and squirmish……..and I can think of a thousand other things I’d rather do than ask someone to give…..

But then I see their faces and hear of their need.

I think of the mothers as I give my children their baths at night.

I think of them as I give my girls clean water to drink at lunch and dinner time.

I think of them as I remind my daughters to turn off their running water as they brush their teeth…because their need is constantly on my mind.

Their unfortunate circumstance reminds me to be more appreciative of mine.

Water.

In the physical and spiritual sense it’s the difference between life and death.

Physical water gives life just like the “Living Water” gives life, salvation….hope.

And so this is where you find me. Asking for those who do not have a voice. Being the voice of the silent ones, who live in a country none of us may ever visit….but does that even matter?

I read in Matthew 25: 35 to give to those who are thirsty and because of their desperate need, their desperate thirst, I’m willing to go out of my comfort zone……….and ask, how many moms, how many children, how many families can you help this Christmas?

Our Christmas challenge has been to give the gift of water…….1 dollar gives the gift of water for 1 year for 1 individual. How many lives can you impact?

Today I was contacted by a VERY generous Good Morning Girl leader and her husband who have agreed to MATCH the remaining money we need to raise to reach our goal of 10,000!!! So far we have raised $6,700…..we have 10 more days to go…..WE CAN DO THIS!!!

In light of Friday’s tragedy, I’ve been thinking a lot about overcoming……and I’m reminded of Romans 12:21.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

When we put others before ourselves. Their needs before our wants…….we love those we have never met…….we become Jesus’s hands and feet and we love well… we love like Jesus. And when we love like Jesus, we are able to overcome evil with good.

Please join me in praying what involvement you are being called to take in helping us provide clean water to the children, the mothers, the families of Liberia by overcoming the heartbreak that has taken place with the good that God can do through us.

Just think if all 17,000 Good Morning Girls donated 1 dollar…..an entire NATION could be changed!

In the words of our generous GMG Leader and her husband…..“Let’s get this done!”

It’s your move!

How much does one well cost?

  • ONE dollar gives ONE Liberian clean water for ONE year.  How many people can you help?
  • Purchase a water well for a community in Liberia for $3000.  The average well serves 1000 people!
  • Purchase a bio-sand water filter for one family in rural Liberia for $102.  You can give an entire family clean water!

How Can You Get Involved?

  • Add The Last Well to your Christmas list.
  • Talk with your family about The Last Well and give a family gift.
  • Give up a Christmas gift(s) and instead donate the money to The Last Well.
  • Invite your children to give up a Christmas gift(s) and donate the money to The Last Well.
  • Have a “Happy Birthday Jesus” party with your friends and their kids. (I talk about this idea in our Advent eBook on page 40) Instead of having children bring gifts to donate, have them donate the money online and learn more about the need for clean water in Liberia, building awareness of how other children live around the world.
  • Tell friends about THE LAST Well by sharing this graphic on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, informing more people of this wonderful organization and the great need of physical water and the “Living Water” in Liberia!
  • PRAY! Pray God will use us mightily in this nation for HIS GLORY!

Please join us as we strive to make a difference in our generation for Christ by serving one of the poorest countries in the world. Imagine what 17,000 Good Morning Girls could do by giving just $10 each. We could provide clean water and the Gospel to thousands of Liberians, saving lives now and changing eternal destinies as well.

Please join us this Christmas and help change a nation in the name of Jesus, one water well at a time!

Advent- {Hope} Week 1

Welcome to week 1 in our 4 week Advent study: Keeping Our Hearts Focused on Jesus!

We are so glad you are joining us!

(Click here if you can’t see the video)

For millions of people around the world, this is a VERY busy time of the year. We have Christmas parties to plan, presents to purchase, cookies to make and friends and family to visit.

But for Christians, this time of year is much more than just parties, presents and people…..it’s about celebrating the birth of our Savior….our one and only hope in this world.

As Christians we are a people of hope. That doesn’t mean we have perfect lives, quite the contrary, Jesus tells us in John 16:33 that we will have tribulation in this life, but what it does mean is that we are not alone in our struggles. We are not alone in life’s disappointments. We are not alone in our brokenness. We are not alone because Christ, our Emmanuel, is with us!

This week as we begin celebrating Advent, let’s concentrate on the hope Jesus brought to us through His birth, that special Christmas night so many years ago.

God gave us the greatest gift ever….He gave Himself….He gave us HOPE!

But how do we put our hope in Jesus when life and our circumstances seem so hopeless?

1. Pray- Be honest with God and ask Him for help!

2. Read scripture- Don’t know where to start? Turn to the back of your Bible, look up the word: Hope and read the verses that are listed.

3. Trust Him for help- So many times when we have problems in life, we turn to “professionals”, to self-help books and to others. While God can and does work through people to help us, we first need to seek God’s help before we seek help from others.

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

4. Change your focus- Look up! Think eternal! Realize that the best is YET TO COME!!!

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,” 1 Peter 1:3-4

This week as we light our first of 4 candles, remember that Jesus is the light of the world!

The light by which we see everything….our lives…our world!

As Christians we always have hope not because of anything we can do or not do, but because of the gift of Jesus and His ultimate sacrifice so many years ago!
