James 4:1-12 ~ Are You Being Loyal To God or Adulterous?

This week’s passage cut me to the quick.

I feel like I have grown close to James while writing out this book and studying his words.

Do you know how James died???

Not long after writing the book of James he was martyred in Jerusalem in 62AD. He was taken by a high priest to a high point on the temple and they demanded that he renounce Christ. When he refused he was pushed over the edge of the temple and then stoned.

Hegesippus tells us that at this point “they went up and threw down the just man [from the temple height], and said to each other, ‘Let us stone James the Just.’And they began to stone him, for he was not killed by the fall, but he knelt down and said, ‘I entreat thee, Lord God our Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do’ [thus following his brother's example to the last]. One of them, who was a fuller, took the club with which he beat out clothes and struck the just man on the head. And thus he suffered martyrdom” (quoted in Biblical Archaeology Review, November-December 2002, p. 32).

James lived and died a loyal life to the glory of God.  And I am challenged…how am I living?

This week’s video includes the story of one of my classmates from the Moody Bible Institute who died a martyrs death.  Both her living and dying inspires me and I think she’ll inspire you too.

Week 6 Vlog & Learning To Tame Our Tongue

The genuineness of a person’s faith will inevitably be demonstrated by his/her speech.- John MacArthur

…For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
-Matthew 12:34-36-

Week 6 Challenge: This week we are going to focus on taming our tongues. Every morning BEFORE you get out of bed, ask God to help you control your tongue for the day. Focus on speaking words that are gentle and loving……life-giving words, not life-hurting words.

If you struggle in this area, ask your GMGs to pray over you concerning this area in your life, ask them to hold you accountable. This week let’s take it one step further though, tell your family about this week’s challenge and let them know you will be focusing on taming your tongue and applying James 3:1-12 in your life.

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.

– Psalm 141:3-

When you feel tempted to:

When you feel tempted to “put that person in his/her place”, pray instead.

When you feel tempted to spread a “little gossip”, pray instead.

When you feel tempted to “tell it like it is”, pray instead.

When you feel tempted to return hurtful words with your own hurtful words, pray instead.

When you feel tempted to say something you shouldn’t….DON’T…pray instead.

Pray instead, ask God to give you the strength to overcome the temptation and help you develop the discipline of controlling your tongue.

Ways that we can tame our tongues:

1. Humble yourself

2. Put off all slander and evil speaking

3. Put on a heart and words of kindness, love, forgiveness and grace

4. Bring your thought life under the control of the Holy Spirit

5. Talk less

6. Think before you speak

7. Refuse to listen to slander or gossip about others

(Note: These 7 suggestions come from Revive Our Hearts: How To Control Your Tongue )
