Week 1 Intro to the Proverbs 31 Book Club

Welcome to Week 1 in Proverbs 31!!!  We are so delighted that you are here.

I know that a lot of women have mixed emotions about the Proverbs 31 woman – I mention in the video below how some women are intimidated and even irritated at this passage in the Bible.

I want to challenge women everywhere to read it, accept it, tremble in awe of the mighty God we serve who has called us to such a high task and pray.

(if you cannot see the video click here - and if you are wondering what passage I am referring to in the video -  with a list for noble men - go to I Timothy 3:1-13.)

This week’s reading assignment is found on our reading plan here and is also in our study guide here. (if you don’t wish to print the study guide just grab a spiral notebook and use the SOAP method below for each passage you read.)

We encourage you to daily be in God’s word using the Bible reading plan and the SOAP method.  What is the S.O.A.P. method? So glad you asked!

The S.O.A.P. Method stands for:

1.  S- Write out the scripture passage for the day.

2. O- Write down 1 or 2 observations from the passage.

3. A- Write down 1-2 applications from the passage.

4. P- Pray over what you learned from today’s passage.

This is a place of grace – college students, nursing moms, working moms, homeschooling moms, room moms, grandma’s caring for their grandchildren or ailing parents, and women from all walks of life are here! We women are busy and doers! We need this time – but this needs to be a time of peace – NO pressure – do what time allows.

Even when you miss a day of your quiet time, it’s important that you stay connected to your group. It is very easy to lose fellowship if you do not remain committed to your accountability group. Be honest. Say you are struggling – I KNOW they will lift you up in prayer! And Girls – we ALL need more prayer – don’t we?

I’m lifting you all up in prayer this week! Now dig in and enjoy!

Walk with the King!

**This Wednesday we will have a link-up for bloggers. If you have a blog, we invite you to write about what you are learning in your quiet time or about your GMG group. You DO NOT have to write about Proverbs 31 - we are interested in hearing from everyone about all the studies you are all doing. So please join our link-up party. If you are not a blogger, we invite you to visit other GMG’s blogs and to share here in our comment section what God is teaching you during your morning quiet time.

Only 7 More Days Until GMG Starts!!!

Courtney and I are so excited to unveil our Ministry of Motherhood S.O.A.P. & Book Club schedule! During the upcoming 12 week study we are going to be using the S.O.A.P. Method to help us dig deeper into scripture as we read Ministry of Motherhood together.

By the end of the 12 weeks, you will have written out and meditated on numerous verses all geared toward strengthening and growing us as mothers. Many days you will only see one verse listed to read….we do that for a reason! We want you to mediate, ponder, apply and eventually store these verses in our memory and hearts. Simply reading the verse and closing your bible for the day won’t have the same effect as if you read the verse, write it on a note card and re-read it through-out the day meditating and praying over the verse and asking God to help you apply it to your life. We want you to interact with God’s Word on a deeper level….using the S.O.A.P. method helps you go deeper.

As you go through this study, if you come across a verse or passage that you don’t understand, we recommend Crosswalk’s Bible Study Tools found here:http://www.biblestudytools.com/ On this page in the lower right hand corner, you can find links to Bible dictionaries, commentaries, concordances, and other Bible translations, etc.

We also recommend Matthew Henry’s Commentary’s found here: http://www.biblestudytools.com/commentaries/matthew-henry-complete/

Our Web Schedule:

On Monday’s, you’ll see Sally Clarkson’s exclusive videos pertaining to that week’s reading in Ministry of Motherhood. Wisdom just pours out of Sally so you won’t want to miss what she has to say each Monday. The only thing better would be to have Sally Clarkson sit right next to you and mentor you personally!

On Wednesday’s, we invite you to link up or comment in the comment section and share what you are learning during your quiet times- this is your day to interact! As a change this session, we will also have several bloggers guest posting on what they learned while reading Ministry of Motherhood!

On Friday’s, Courtney and I will close with a discussion on what we learned through that week’s reading as well as share our answers to some of the discussion questions.

Our 12 week schedule looks like this:

Reading over the Ministry of Motherhood schedule you’ll see each day, Monday-Friday, you have one or a few verses to read from the bible and mediate on. Besides the daily scripture reading you’ll also have two chapters to read each week. Every other week there will be discussion questions for you to answer and share with your group. If you don’t have a group, please feel free to share online by commenting on our blog posts! We always love to hear from you!  I know two chapters might sound like a lot to read, but after looking through the book you’ll see that each chapter is only a few pages and I guarantee you, you’ll have a hard time stopping at just two!!! :)

It’s Time to Share and link-up

A few of you have asked to see how we are completing the S.O.A.P. method so I thought I’d show you what I wrote down for today’s verses. Hope this helps!

James 1: 22-24

S- Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

O- In these verses I observe that I am not to just listen to God’s Word- being passive. God calls us to be active in our faith by doing what it says. Being a doer helps us to remember what God’s word says. Moving from passive listener to active doer helps us to internalize God’s Word and moves us into better understanding.

A- I need to make sure that I am moving beyond just reading and listening to God’s Word. I want my faith to be active. I want to be a doer of God’s Word. I want God’s truth to penetrate the deepest levels of my heart. I don’t want to simply take in God’s Word, I want His Words to change me. I want to become more like Christ each day- Christ wasn’t passive. His faith was active. My faith needs to be active too.

P- Lord, please help me to find ways to put your words into action in my life. Please change me from the inside out. Please keep me from being like the man who hears your words and does not allow them to change him. Please bless me with head knowledge and heart knowledge. I pray when people see me- they truly only see you. Use me Jesus.

Here’s another example for you from our reading this week:

James 1:19-20

S- My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

O- Everyone includes ME! I need to listen more and react less. I need to speak less- no rants! My anger is unrighteous and undesirable to God.

A- Listen more- slow down. Slow down my reactions- be wise-don’t be emotional. My anger displeases God.

P- Lord, help me as I deal with the children to be quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to anger. I am their role model. Help me to teach this to my children by living it first. I love you Jesus!

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Here I explain in greater detail what each section stands for, remember these are just guidelines to help you.

S- stands for “Scripture” you are to write out the verses in your own handwriting. By the end of our James study, you will have written out the WHOLE book of James! Also writing out the scripture helps you to understand it better and take a closer, slower look at the verses.

O- stands for “Observations“, what do you notice in this passage? You may want to summarize the verses in your own words, but most importantly write down what you hear God saying to you in these verses. What new observations or insights have you learned?

A- stands for “Application“, how can you apply what you just read to your life? Make it personal. Is there something that you need to change? Someone you need to forgive?

P- stands for “Prayer“, pray over what God has shown you today through His Word. Ask Him to help you live it out.

Thanks for making the time to be in God’s Word a priority in your life!

Learning to LOVE GOD GREATLY right along with you!!!

-Angela
