A Farewell Video From Sally!

Sweet Sally has taken a moment to bid our Summer Good Morning Girls and Ministry of Motherhood Book Club Farewell.

If you can’t see this video – please view it here.

I have needed this study this summer. Many times I sat down to Skype Angela, feeling defeated or inept to share anything worthy at all. If you could have seen our unrecorded conversation right before we hit record you would laugh. Ang and I have shaken our heads at the crazy events of our day. It seemed that often right before we recorded, we had intense moments with our children where what we were about to discuss was so real and applicable in our own lives. God used Sally this summer to comfort us, inspire us, hold us accountable in weak areas, give us vision and a hope.

Thank you Sally for sharing your heart with us all summer long. You have touched our lives and in turn you have touched our children’s lives.

For those who are asking – WHAT’S NEXT??? Hang onto your seats because this Friday we plan to share the Book of the Bible we will be “SOAP“ing our way through!

{Week 12} Ministry of Motherhood Chapters 19 & 20 Commentary

I can’t believe how fast this summer book club has went! Today we are finishing our reading of the Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson!!! I pray God has used this book mightily in your life this past summer as you strive to be the mother God is calling each of us to!

Today I’d like to share my two favorite quotes from this week’s reading…..I believe they sum up the whole book beautifully!

“In the end, the measure of my success as a mother will not be how well I have taught my kids or cared for them but whether I have been faithful in helping them respond to God’s call on their lives.”- Sally Clarkson, pg 208

“Jesus isn’t limited by the personalities of our children or by our own personalities or by our education or life skills or lack of the same. He is only limited by our trying to do his will our way, in our flesh.”- Sally Clarkson, pg 209

For those of you who are struggling with ways to teach your children the Gift of Service, allow me to introduce you to two books aimed at helping parents develop the Gift of Service in their children.

77 Ways Your Family Can Make a Difference by Penny A. Zeller is a wonderful resource which contains 77 suggestions and activities you can do with your family to help cultivate love and compassion for others as you strive to make the world a better place…one person at a time. This book contains:

  • Creative activities that are easy to adapt to your families needs
  • Ideas for a variety of budgets
  • Bible verses to help children connect God’s truth to their lives
  • Interactive discussion questions to help your family understand the importance of each activity and correlate it to God’s Word.

Families on Mission by Angie Quantrell is a wonderful resource to use for families of preschoolers. Think of it as a guide to help your family experience many different ways to serve others. Topics include praying sharing, giving, helping and loving to name just a few. Each topic includes verses to read, bible thoughts for preschoolers, discussion questions and an assortment of activities to reinforce that particular topic. Activitiy examples include:

  • Greeting Card Stockings
  • Flashlight Walk
  • Bible Thought Bucket
  • Feelings Cup

Thanks again for joining us this summer! Courtney and I have so enjoyed doing this summer book club with each of you! Make sure and stay tuned next week for a special video from Sally as well as our fall GMG announcement! I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us this fall…besides me having a baby that is!

Until next time…

Women In The Word Wednesdays- Serving As A Family

Mark 10:43-45

“…Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Allow for me to brag just for a second…….:) I LOVE my church! I’m very fortunate to go to a church that is active in equipping their members with resources which aid us in instilling God’s Word and values into our families. Today I’ve included one of many resources that have been created through a ministry at my church called HomePointe. Today I’ve provided a downloadable document on serving with your family as well as a link to where you can find some of HomePointe’s other resources created with your family in mind.

On Friday I’ll share two books you can use with your families to help you come up with ideas and ways to help develop the Gift of Serving.

{Week 12} Ministry of Motherhood Chapters 19 & 20

My dear friends we will be reading the last two chapters this week in the Ministry of Motherhood! I can’t believe how FAST this summer book club has gone! I pray you have enjoyed it as much as Courtney and I have! Reading and watching Sally’s videos each week has had a tremendous impact on my parenting and the way I see my role as a mother.

Next week will be a time of reflection over what we have learned through this wonderful book club. Courtney and I will also be sharing our plans for our next GMG session! Can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Below I share a few of my favorite quotes from this week’s reading:

“Most worthwhile endeavors- whether they involve housework and chores, schoolwork, serving outside the home or providing hospitality within it, or training our children to be servants of the Lord- end up taking more time, energy, effort, and character than we ever thought they would.”- Sally Clarkson, pg 197

I know in my personal life I have already found this to be the case.

“In the end, the measure of my success as a mother will not be how well I have taught my kids or cared for them but whether I have been faithful in helping them respond to God’s call on their lives.”- Sally Clarkson, pg 209

“Jesus isn’t limited by the personalities of our children or by our own personalities or by our education or life skills or lack of the same. He is only limited by our trying to do his will our way, in our flesh.”- Sally Clarkson, pg 209

{Week 11} Ministry of Motherhood Chapters 17 & 18 Commentary

Some weeks go smoothly and others don’t. This week I am having one of those weeks that nothing seems to go according to MY plan. I’m learning when this happens to just let go and follow God’s lead. Courtney and I tried to Skype Monday night but our connection was terrible and the quality……well there just wasn’t any. So unfortunately we don’t have a video for you today. On Tuesday my sweet OB-GYN changed my due date and made it a little sooner which totally threw me into MAJOR nesting mode and then Tuesday evening I found out that my dad was just diagnosed with cancer. I tell you all this because I never want you to think that Courtney and I live these perfect lives, have perfect children, perfect husbands and are perfect mothers and wives.

We aren’t.

I’m not.

I struggle.

I worry.

I cry.

I cling to Jesus and His plan for my life and the lives of my dear loved ones.

And you know what? I was given a precious gift this week. I was given a reminder to CHERISH the time I have with my loved ones NOW. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Cherish our time with them and be thankful for the time God has given them to us.

I was able to have dinner tonight with my dad and family and I soaked in the moment. I looked a little longer, paid attention a little better and squeezed a little tighter when we hugged good-by.

Tonight I soaked in the moment.

Tonight I was reminded that sometimes blessings come to us through sad news and tears.

Tonight I’m praying for healing, trusting in God’s plan and am thankful for the reminder to CHERISH all the loved ones God has placed in my life.

Ok, enough about me let’s get back to discussing the Gift of Service- Chapters 17 & 18

I LOVE what Sally says on pg 181, “Giving our children the gift of service is not really a matter of teaching them what to do. It’s more a matter of helping them look at other people through Jesus’ eyes and respond as he did.”

Praying over our children, as well as ourselves, that we will see people the way Jesus sees them is so important. Over and over again in the bible we see Jesus reaching out and helping those who were considered social outcasts. We read that Jesus had compassion while the disciples wanted to send the hurting, seeking and helpless away.

Do you truly want to make a difference in this world? Then love others the way Jesus did. Serve others the way Jesus did.

Love without expecting it back.

Serve without expecting to be served in return.

“In the world of evangelical Christianity, where ‘strategic ministry’ is a common catch phrase and ‘moving with the movers’ is often held up as a principle of leadership, we need to be careful that we don’t become like the Pharisees. They were informed and educated men but useless to the cause of Christ precisely because they lacked compassion and humility.”- Sally Clarkson, pg 182

As mothers, we have to go further than just educating our children in the “Whys” of why we are called to serve others and instead just start doing it with them. Turning what they know into compassion. Moving from strictly head knowledge to heart knowledge. Simply knowing that we are called to serve others isn’t enough. We have to demonstrate it and do it with our families.

I believe we can make our “worlds” to clean and to perfect where we don’t encourage an environment where our children can develop hearts that are compassionate and humble towards others. Allowing our children to interact with others who are not like them either in looks, in needs, in abilities etc. helps them see others needs and allows them opportunities for compassion and mercy.

What are some ways you are teaching your children to serve others?

Next week we will finish the Gift of Service by reading chapters 19 & 20 as well as finish the Ministry of Motherhood book! I can’t believe it is almost over already!

For those of you who are wondering, Courtney and I will announce the fall session the following week……we are currently working on it right now.

Until next time…

Love God Greatly!
