{Week 7-Anything} Praying for Unity & Fighting with Prayer

DSC_0005 copy

We are at war. Whether we like it or not, this is a reality for those of us who love Jesus. Though we are in this world, we are not of this world. We are not home yet.

“We were made for this bigger story…we were made to show the glory of God and to fight dark cosmic forces, even if we are at PTA or a Mavs game…We’re fighting for God’s glory and clinging to him for protection and guidance.”- Jennie Allen, page 158

Friends, we are in a battle zone, you can see it all around. Our marriages are under attack, our children are under attack…and sadly, even our churches.

But take heart sweet sisters, we are NOT alone in this battle. God is fighting with us and for us…HE is our shield and protector.

Isaiah 41:10  fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Last week in John 17 we saw how Jesus prayed for us with the power of His mighty name. He prayed for our protection from the evil one and He prayed for our unity.

“Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name–the name you gave me–so that they be one as we are one.” John 17:11

Jesus knows we are much stronger when we are unified, a cord of 3 strands is not easily broken…..but satan also knows that truth and so he comes in and tries to break our unity, cause division and leave us alone and vulnerable.

So how can we fight back?

With God’s Word……that’s why it’s sooooo important to be in God’s Word for ourselves. To be reading it daily, to allow God to sanctify us with His truth, to allow His words to cleanse our minds and help us defeat satan with his lies and schemes. Even Jesus fought satan in the dessert with scripture! Why are we so arrogant to we think we shouldn’t do the same? Part of our disunity is because people would rather hold their opinions close to their hearts rather than God’s Word, God’s truth.

Through prayer- We fight these battles on our knees in prayer. Busy schedules and late nights make it hard to find time to spend with God in His Word and in prayer. I know this because I struggle in this same area just like many of you. My days are busy driving my children from point A to point B, getting groceries, cleaning the house, making meals, running errands….and my list goes on and on. But the reality is, that’s exactly how satan wants us to live our lives. Running from here to there, being busy but not really doing anything significant….like praying…fighting for our churches, for our marriages and for the souls of those who do not know Christ. When we are focused, when we are unified as believers…..when we are intentional with our time and making God first in our lives…..unseen battles are won.

{Week 7} Challenge:
This week pray for the unity and protection of Christians in our country and around the world. Pray specifically for your church. Pray that our churches will be filled with men and women who desire to do God’s will for their lives. Pray that the Holy Spirit will powerfully move through our churches like never before. Pray for Christians to have love and compassion for those outside of the church, that the world will know us by our love. Pray against disunity in our churches. Pray for wisdom and strength for our pastors and elders.

“I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”- Jesus (John 17:23)

Let’s Talk: How can I be praying for your church this week?

  1. Thanks for sharing today, Angela. I think the enemy’s greatest tool is distraction … to keep us from praying. Thank you for the reminder.

    • Hi Tricia! Always love hearing from you! Yes, I agree….how many times have I started praying and either someone comes in to tell me something, or I suddenly remember something that I need to do….yes, distraction is for sure one of his tools.

  2. Hi Angela! Our church is hosting Vacation Bible School this week, so I would like to ask that you pray for us to really reach these kids with God’s Word and show them a really fun time :) Thank you!

    • Ohhh praying for your church this week, Erin and for all the little ones who will be participating! Praying for soft hearts, clear messages and fun times for everyone involved! Thanks for providing this wonderful opportunity for them! :)

  3. I so needed this today. Thank you so much. <3

  4. I agree Tricia, distraction is another effective tool of the enemy. Thank you Angela for this post today. I too, needed to see this. Not that it’s new information for me, but it’s encouraging to know there are other believers struggling in the fight and it keeps me going. Please pray for our church and specifically my husband (the pastor of our church) as he has dental surgery tomorrow and throat surgery on Friday this week. Thanks.

    • Oh my, praying for your husband and the surgeries he is having this week! Praying over the hospital staff involved in both surgeries as well as for his quick healing. :)

  5. I have been so inspired and affirmed by all that you all have written these past weeks. Thanks for your willingness to speak the truth and love us at the same time. I have found that it is wonderful to have a community of believers along side me even in the internet world. I think it is also appropriate that you did not mean to but you wrote that Jesus defeated satan in the “DESSERT” with scripture because that seems to be the place that I also need the most strength. I am forever in battle with the food issues…. too much that is. Thanks for the sweet moment that I can share along with those who I know are right there with me and rooting for me!

    • Ohhh my Lena, I didn’t even catch that last night when I read through it before I posted it. Ahhhh God sure does like to keep me humble. :) Well, I’m glad He used my mistake to encourage you! I’m always up for encouraging you all so even though it wasn’t intentional, I’m glad God used my mistake to speak to your heart today. :)

  6. It’s catch up for me this week. But, God knew when I would need it. I will definitely be sharing this challenge Wednesday night with our members. Over the last couple of months, I have been sharing with our Wednesday nite group that this Christian journey is a daily battle that I as a Pastor’s Wife also struggle with. Definitely been convicted today on how to get past people, and remember the real enemy.

Please pray that in our church unity be strengthened, that love reigns in our church, and that we reach out to those in our community that need us the most.
