How To Live Like Jesus…

I have literally been sitting here for hours trying to get this post written…..

Typing words, then deleting them.

Reading and praying and reading the verses over and over again.

More typing and more deleting.

I have words in my heart that are having trouble getting out……nights like tonight tend to become early mornings for me.

You see, blogging is a struggle for me. I’m not a natural writer. Words don’t normally flow from me very easily. I struggle with them, pray over them and ask God just to speak through me.

I am only a vessel.

There is so much on my heart that I’d love to share concerning Luke chapter 5, but the biggest point I see is Jesus’s love and compassion for all the different types of people He encountered.

  • The leper
  • The paralyzed man & his friends
  • The Pharisees
  • The tax collectors

If we truly want to “Live Like Jesus”, we have to be willing to rub shoulders with people who are different from us.

We have to be willing to reach out and touch those who are hurting.

We have to extend words of encouragement and generously give hugs of compassion to those who are hurting, broken and discouraged.

I have one life to live and I want to daily give it away to whoever God chooses to place in my life for that particular day.

From the moment I took my first breath, the ticking clock of my numbered days began.

I want every day to matter.

The good days and the bad days…I want them all to matter.

I have been given this one beautiful life…….I want it to count, I want it to bring glory to God.

I want to live my life like Jesus…for Jesus.

I want to love people the way He loves people.

I want to see them the way He sees them.

I want to have the same compassion that He has for people.

I want to mourn with those who are mourning and rejoice with those who are rejoicing. (Romans 12:15)

In order to be more like Christ…..I need to go where He goes. Even if that means to the “other” side of the tracks…

I need to associate with those He associated with….

Jesus came for the hurting, the lost….am I not called to reach out to the same?

Living Like Jesus means getting out of my comfort zone.

It means, “rubbing shoulders” with those I feel I don’t have very much in common with.

It means reaching out and touching the “lepers” in my life….and realizing I have a lot in common with them.

We are all needing a touch from our Savior.

We all need to hear that He is willing…

Willing to walk this straight and narrow path with us.

Willing to help us seek His face each day.

Willing to forgive on the days that we have failed.

Willing to extend, grace, love and compassion to us just like He did to those we have read about this week.

You see, we are all infected with sin…some of us just wear the effects of our sins more visibly than others but make no mistake, we are all desperate for a touch from our Savior.

This past January I wrote my 2013 New Year resolutions down in a journal, this is what I wrote:

“I want to “Live Like Jesus” this year. By the end of 2013 I want to be more like Christ than I was at the beginning of 2013…plain and simple, that’s my resolution.”

I want to love more, love deeper and love greater.

I want to see people the way Jesus sees them. With love, compassion and understanding.

If we want to be like Jesus, we have to step out of our “circles” of comfort and step into other people’s worlds.

As a Christian, I want to live my life like Jesus lived His……fully engaged in God’s work knowing His purpose and acting on it with love and compassion.

To the leper,  Jesus reached out and spoke the words, “I am willing.” He didn’t have to, Jesus could have healed the leper with His words, but Jesus knew that wouldn’t be enough…..Jesus reached out his hand and touched him, “I am willing..” Then Jesus spoke words of love and encouragement. Am I not called to do the same? Reach out, touch those who are hurting in my life and then speak words of love, compassion and healing.

My challenge for us as we strive to “Live Like Jesus” is to lovingly reach out to those who no one touches, to truly “be willing” to be Jesus’s hands and feet on this earth by being watchful of those who are discarded by others.

A few years later, Jesus will stretch out His hands….. on a cross and this time through the sacrifice of His life He said…..”I am willing” once again.

What are some ways you can say, “I am willing” in your life?

What are some ways we can “Live Like Jesus” this week as we seek to be Jesus’s hands and feet to a hurting world?

Love God Greatly!

-Angela

  1. I loved this one Angela.
    Through my Father’s eyes…

  2. I am finding this study and your words a real blessing and I thank you that you are open to God using you in this way to support others. Your resolution is powerful ‘By the end of 2013 I want to be more like Christ than I was at the beginning of 2013′,and by your words you are helping us to join you on this journey.

  3. Well worth the struggle.

The best line for me, “I want to see people the way Jesus sees them. With love, compassion and understanding.”

We are all struggling at the foot the cross, to know Him, love Him, and transcend that love to others. May our work never be done.

    Thank you.

  4. Beautiful! This study is just what I’ve needed. Thank you!

  5. Powerful, love, love this!! So how I want to live my life, but it is a struggle.

  6. Oh Angela, thank you for the hours of struggle you went through to write this beautiful and very meaningful post! I am pretty sure that you were God’s vessel and He pour out through you so much help to a very needy and hurting world!! Please know I too have the goal; thanks to your good idea, of becoming more Christ-like and to “…see people the way Jesus sees them. With love, compassion and understanding.” It certainly must be the right thing to do, because the devil is throwing his book of tricks and lie on me and others in my sphere who also join you in your quest. Please know that I am praying for all of you girls and your beautiful families. God is truly at work through all of you and please continue to listen to Him only!

  7. Wow! That was so wonderful said! I am at the same place!!

    This statement is to perfect.

“You see, we are all infected with sin…some of us just wear the effects of our sins more visibly than others but make no mistake, we are all desperate for a touch from our Savior.”

The visual that it gives me said so much to my heart. Thank you! I have shared this on Facebook because I believe we can all learn from this.

May the Lord bless you greatly for all of your efforts!

  8. Beautiful words! Thank you so very much! Your words reminded me of a sermon by my pastor- simply beautiful and humbling.

  9. This filled my heart with joy today. So much needed in my life as I have struggled with an unloveable for some time. May the Lord use your insight to show me His strength in my life to accomplish the challenging concept of loving the ones who seem unloveable! Thank you for your transparency.

  10. Thanks for this Angela, really needed this today. We sometimes tend to forget that there are other people who are hurting, needed love. Thank you.

  11. Angela! This resonates so much with my heart and soul that I literally feel like my heart is going to explode out of my chest!! I was just telling God a couple of mornings ago that sometimes I feel I have so much love to give and I asked for His guidance on what He wants me to do with it. I love people, I’m so thankful for the ones God has placed on this earth in the same timeline with me. But, I don’t step out of my comfort zone often enough to reach out. I share with and give to those God puts in front of me, (family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintances, and strangers who are in need) but I don’t often step out of my comfort zone to SEEK OUT the strangers – to give them help, hugs, or to pray with them. Thank you for sharing God’s word through your heart. You ARE a vessel! Blessings to you and Good Morning Girls everywhere!! Love in His Name, Dana

  12. Wow! Beautifully said. I love this part, “I have one life to live and I want to daily give it away to whoever God chooses to place in my life for that particular day.”

    Thanks…

  13. Angela,

I don’t think you lacked for words here. They are beautiful words that touched my heart. You said everything I’ve been thinking lately – I want to be more like Christ. I want to love more, deeper; I want to give more especially to those who need what I have to offer. I wish I really knew what God’s wish is for my life. I don’t know what it is. I try every day to find it and hope that one day, I will know what it is I’m to do with my life for others in Jesus’ name.

Your blog today is exactly the way I have been feeling and praying as well. I referred to today’s reading in my Facebook group as seeing and living life through God’s glasses. How often do I see a situation as empty and without fruit when I’m looking through my human eyes. If we put on God’s glasses, we can see the potential and fruit beyond what our vision allows us to see. There’s clarity in and through Him! By the way, blogging may be a struggle for you but we sure can’t tell! God is using you through it as we all find your words encouraging to our hearts and souls. So blog on vessel-of-Angelea…blog on…. :-)

I’m not sure where to ask this, but would GMG consider doing a Lenten study next year? The advent study was so good. I’d love a study that draws us to prepare our hearts for Christ’s death and resurrection, seeing our sin and depravity as it is and seeing our Savior’s amazing sacrifice and making a way for our salvation.
    Thanks, Kelley

  16. The images with verses & quotes have been so inspiring, as well as your heartfelt thoughts. Thank you! :)

  17. Wow! God has been using me in this very way this week. I have been led to several different people who needed a touch from Jesus this week. I stand amazed at how God works!!

  18. Yes!! What an uplifting message. Thank you.

  19. Thank you for listening to God as He had his hands on yours as you wrote this day. I am one of the many that needed to hear what you had to say. For over a year, I have retreated into, a safe little cocoon built for one, after being hurt by those I cared for. Holy Spirit keeps encouraging me to step back into the world and rub shoulds with those that no one wants. I have been so afraid. Then I read,… “Live Like Jesus” is to lovingly reach out to those who no one touches, to truly “be willing” to be Jesus’s hands and feet on this earth by being watchful of those who are discarded by others.

A few years later, Jesus will stretch out His hands….. on a cross and this time through the sacrifice of His life He said…..”I am willing” once again.

Thank you for being His vessel.

  20. Thank you for sharing today. Your writing has been a blessing to me during the past four studies I have been privileged to participate in.
    Thank you!

  21. Thank you sweet friends for YOUR encouragement tonight. I just stand in awe of what God can do through our lives. So blessed to be on this journey of becoming more like Christ, with each of you! :)

    Love God Greatly!

  22. Great post!! Love the ONE in front of you. :)

  23. There was a women who had nothing from the world’s view. We set out to “minister” to her. When she died I realized she taught us far more than we could have imagined. It was she who ministered to us suburban ladies ;-) in the things that were far more precious than material needs.

  24. This was wonderful and inspiring to me that I should get out of my comfort zone and love others. A good reminder, and very timely.

Please send me all the materials, study guide, for Viviendo como Jesus, Lucas 1-8 in spanish so I can share it in Chile! I’m a missionary here for 16 years.
    Thank you,

  26. I am learning to live like jesus everyday and am really touched by what u have written. In this everyday life I want to be able to account everyday for how I lived my life.I pray that he gives me the grace and strength to carry on

  27. I love the resolution. So simple and so powerful. I have been struggling greatly for the last several months and have been solely focusing on ME. Today, I am going to think about how Jesus would see the world around me-how I can reach out and help someone else. Thank you!

  28. I was sexually, mentally, emotionally and verbally abused by my grandfather as far back as I can remember. He did many terrible things, some of which are too distasteful for me to talk about publicly. I want to share my testimony, because so many people have been hurt, and they need to realize that someone has made it through their struggles so they can have hope. More than anything, I want you to know and really understand that anyone who has been abused can fully recover if they will give their life completely to the Lord…It may seem impossible, but God’s truth has set me free from a life of pretense and lies and has restored my soul. I am living proof that nothing is too hard for God. No matter what you’ve been through or how bad you’ve been hurt, there is hope!
