Advent- {Hope} Week 1

Welcome to week 1 in our 4 week Advent study: Keeping Our Hearts Focused on Jesus!

We are so glad you are joining us!

(Click here if you can’t see the video)

For millions of people around the world, this is a VERY busy time of the year. We have Christmas parties to plan, presents to purchase, cookies to make and friends and family to visit.

But for Christians, this time of year is much more than just parties, presents and people…..it’s about celebrating the birth of our Savior….our one and only hope in this world.

As Christians we are a people of hope. That doesn’t mean we have perfect lives, quite the contrary, Jesus tells us in John 16:33 that we will have tribulation in this life, but what it does mean is that we are not alone in our struggles. We are not alone in life’s disappointments. We are not alone in our brokenness. We are not alone because Christ, our Emmanuel, is with us!

This week as we begin celebrating Advent, let’s concentrate on the hope Jesus brought to us through His birth, that special Christmas night so many years ago.

God gave us the greatest gift ever….He gave Himself….He gave us HOPE!

But how do we put our hope in Jesus when life and our circumstances seem so hopeless?

1. Pray- Be honest with God and ask Him for help!

2. Read scripture- Don’t know where to start? Turn to the back of your Bible, look up the word: Hope and read the verses that are listed.

3. Trust Him for help- So many times when we have problems in life, we turn to “professionals”, to self-help books and to others. While God can and does work through people to help us, we first need to seek God’s help before we seek help from others.

“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

4. Change your focus- Look up! Think eternal! Realize that the best is YET TO COME!!!

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,” 1 Peter 1:3-4

This week as we light our first of 4 candles, remember that Jesus is the light of the world!

The light by which we see everything….our lives…our world!

As Christians we always have hope not because of anything we can do or not do, but because of the gift of Jesus and His ultimate sacrifice so many years ago!

  2. We had great interaction in my group from Sunday’s scripture reading and we are so excited to spend the next (4) weeks focusing in Christ! In Him, Martha

  3. When I think about hope, this section of Romans comes to mind:

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction into this grace in which we stand, and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Rom 5.1-5, NASB).

I’m in the kind of season where memorizing this might be helpful…I might use this week to do that.

What an apt way to enter the Advent season – thanks for putting this together, Angela. Looking forward to the next few weeks…

P.S. I subscribed via Google Reader and haven’t yet received the e-Book…help?

  4. How do I download the advent materials?

I am so excited to begin this journey with everyone, but I cant seem to locate the link to the e-book.
    Thank-you for your ministry!

  9. I love what the word “hope” does to my soul! I make reusable celebration banners out of fabric to sell and last year I wanted to make a banner that reminded me of the real reason we as believers celebrate Christmas. I was listening to Christy Nockel’s song, “No Not One” on the way to church one morning and a line from the song really struck me and I decided that I wanted to make a line of Christmas banners that said, “Hope Has Come!” And so the first thing I am going to put up for my Christmas decorations is my “Hope Has Come!” banner. Our Hope came on Christmas Day and He is with us forever!!!

  10. I am so excited to be infusing Jesus into our hearts over the next 4 weeks and sharing this with my 13 month old. Although he won’t understand it now, this is how family traditions are started! Xoxo

  15. Jesus is our light in a dark world. And we to must show that light to others. Sometimes that is hard to do. I am so looking forward to this study. I have my advent candles all set up to go. Will light the first one tonight when i get home from work and watch the video. Looking forward to it. Show God’s light to someone today!!

  16. I can’t seem to download the ebook – can someone help? I can’t find it??

  17. Good Morning!!

I have not received a copy of the Advent ebook, can you resend to me please? I have been subscribed and participating ever since Proverbs 31 so I’m not sure why this one did not come through. Thank you!

  18. I am excited to begin this study. I really need to delve into HOPE right now. My husband and I have an amazing 3 year old daughter via domestic adoption. We desperately want a 2nd child. And my daughter prays to Jesus every day to bring her a sibling, sometimes with tears in her eyes. We We began the adoption process and paperwork. My daughter took about 6 months for us to be matched. Now? It’s been almost a year we’ve been waiting. I get in these funks that God doesn’t have a 2nd child for us, that no birth parents will like us enough to pick us, that I’m not a good enough mom for a 2nd child. And I want to Jesus answer my daughter’s prayers so she can see the HOPE we have in Him! So, I’m going to focus on the HOPE that God has my life planned. It may not include a 2nd child or it may….but I am praying for HOPE either way!

  19. Looking forward to learning about Advent and celebrating the season differently this year. I am a subscriber so I got the link to this page, but I’ve been going back to older posts and can’t seem to figure out how to get to the ebook. Can you also send me a link? Thank you :)

  20. Blessings Everyone, Oh how delightful to listen to you Angela again! I really need to focus on HOPE! As you kinda know, I’m in Mexico but my home is/was in MN (I had to add ‘was’ because this is why I need to seek God’s HOPE: my house was totaled in a fire)
Lost so much and so many family treasures-gone up in smoke and ashes and I’m not there, nor can I fly or drive there as they sift through the ashes. I so appreciate the beautiful points given here and in the video on: how do we put our hope in Jesus when life and our circumstances seem so hopeless? (not totally hopeless now, but I really was at first until I saw God’s hand and miracle in the fiery turmoil like Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego!

So although I am midway in another OBS, I really want to center on Jesus and will be jumping on board following with you (even though my previous GMG group fizzled out) and I have not yet gathered any local Mexicans (but HOPE to) to do this study (starting with them next week hopefully, we’ll see what God does).

Is it OK to go solo? Do you(and others) share your S.(OAP) here in the comments?

Thank you so much Angela for all your work and this wonderful message! (Courtney, too!) :0) Loved reading John 1 because LIGHT is My One Word for 2012! LIGHTing my candle with you and focusing on seeing HOPE through God’s Word and the ashes of memories!

Love to you all… loving God first and greatly,
    Peggy

  21. Hello, can you e-mail me the link also? Thanks so much. I would also like to subscribe but by e-mail and not a reader if possible. Thank you!

  22. I am very excited about this study. I know a little about advent through a methodist campus ministry I was involved with in college. I always wondered why the baptist campus ministry I was involved with didn’t have a similar program. I always enjoyed the advent lessons, and I look forward to learning even more. I, now that I have two very young sons, have the opportunity to establish traditions that center on Truth, and I hope this season brings me a clarity as to how to prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. As a new mom, there is so much to consider and learn. Thank you for the resources!

  23. Sally- so glad you’re joining us!!! :)

  25. Hello! I’m so excited to start this study. It’s been a long time since I’ve really dived deep into the Word and I’ve been getting lots of Holy Spirit prompting to do so. I subscribed a couple days ago to this blog through Google Reader. But just tonight I subscribed again with my email so I can get the ebook. I’m anxiously awaiting the links so I can get started. :)

  26. I never received the ebook. For some reason I can never get my ebooks when feedburner is used.

  31. Julie D'Andrea says:

how can I get the ebook? I just signed up for the Advent study and feel behind! Thanks in advance! Julie

  32. We (my family and I) have been doing advent for 8 years now! I am enjoying my quiet time with this and then sharing with my family as we light the candle. My husband and I would light the candle every Sunday morning through advent and I love how we can light a candle every night for the week. We do it during our family dinner time. My kids saw the peppermint bark and are anxiously waiting when can make that. We will do it this weekend. Thanks so much for putting this together. Romans 15:13 really touched my heart and I’m memorizing it this week and wrote it as a prayer over my husband on our bathroom mirror.

  33. Dorothy Smay says:

This a wonderful study. In these times when we have commercial after commercial telling us to buy this or that, that our kids need all of the latest gadgets or our adults too. We NEED to focus on Jesus and remind ourselves and those around us what this season is all about. Go ahead and have the fun, but, remember why we are even here and have what we do.

  34. I too am having a hard time getting the advent book. I subscribed but haven’t found the link for the reading material. Thx!!

  35. Jessie Ansley says:

Hi! I subscribed two days ago and got the initial subscription confirmation email, but haven’t had any follow up emails….which means I don’t have access to the Advent eBook. I don’t want to get too far behind….can anyone help please? Thank you!!

  36. Donna Davis says:

i am trying to down load another printable copy of your Advent Study for myself my daughters have asked for my other one.

  37. HOPE= Have Only Positive Expectations
