Today I have a special post from Shonda Knowlton, the Leadership Encourager, from our GMG Leadership group. Shonda is a former Kindergarten teacher and has come up with a simple and very doable “reading plan” for those of us with little ones! Now our kiddos can learn about Colossians this fall too.
Thanks so much, Shonda, for creating this wonderful resource for us!!!!!
I hope you enjoy!!!

This summer I challenged myself to read the Bible to my kids everyday. I read a verse from each book of the Bible and then read important verses and passages for the rest of the summer. I called it our Summer Bible Reading Adventure. My son, who is 3.5 years old, asked me almost every time I read a verse, “Mommy, what does that mean?” I had to quickly think on my toes how to explain the words to him. Thankfully, God provided just the right thing for me to say.
But I know my kids will always have questions when they read God’s Word, so I developed a little mini word study for you to do with your kids during our Good Morning Girls Bible study in Colossians. I encourage you to bring your kids along in this journey. Let them see you reading the Bible and also read the Bible to them. Create a curiosity for God and His Word. It’s not too early for your kids to study the Bible.
I recommend this word study for kids ages 5 and up. By the end of Colossians your kids (and you!) will have learned 8 new words. You may use the words I suggested or some of your own. As you read, they may say, “What does that mean?” Use that for your word study.
Here is an example of a word study:
Read the passage.
Week 1: Colossians 1:1-14
Word of the week- Faithful
1. Where do I find it? (verse reference)
Colossians 1:2, 7
2. What does it mean? (look up in the dictionary)
True to one’s word, reliable, trusted
3. Why does God want me to know this word and how can I use it my life?
Paul wrote to people who were faithful and Epaphras was a faithful minister. People who believe in God need to faithful so they can do the work that God wants them to do. I want to be faithful like these people. If my mom wants me to do a job, I want her to know that I will do it.
4. Write a short prayer asking God to help you live out this word in your life.
Dear God, I ask that you will help me be faithful like the people that Paul wrote to. I want to have other people know that I can be trusted to do a job that I am asked to do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Questions:
1. Where do I find it? (verse reference)
2. What does it mean? (look up in dictionary)
3. Why does God want me to know this word and how can I use it in my life?
4. Write a short prayer asking God to help you live out this prayer in your life.

Thank you for this!!!
Thank you so much. This is exactly what I ve looking for…my daughter is very interested in the Bible and loves to listen to it on my phone …but then the questions abound. I cant thank you enough for your servants heart. May the Lord continue to bless you as you have blessed us.
Abiding in Him,
Tiff
Gal 6:17
Thank you so much, Tiff! I pray that it will help ignite questions and a passion for God’s Word in your daughter! ~Shonda
Awesome…thank you for sharing this, so awesome. This will be a great study to do with them, while I am.
Blessings,
Adrienne
Thank you. My daughter who is 8 knew I was gearing up for our Colossians study and she asked me if there was one she could do! I told her I would find something and here you are providing a way for my daughter to participate. Thank you do much!
My kids do soap with me as part of their Bible for school (we home educate). Thank you for this thoughtful addition!
Thanks so much! This is awesome!
Thanks so much for the Word Study plan! While homeschooling, we always did word studies at the beginning of a new unit, just so we had a firm grasp on what we about to study. It even helps us grown-ups, since we take for granted that we know the meaning of words we hear often. Sometimes there’s a deeper meaning that we’re missing!
Thank you so much for developing this… I am eager to take my kids along this Colossians journey with me.
Thank you for sharing. I am so excited to start utilizing this.
Thank you, thank you! I love sharing God’s word with my kids, but it is always a challenge to answer their questions (to their satisfaction). I appreciate that you shared this!
THANK YOU! My daughter is five and we were wanting to increase her level of bible study beyond bible stories…What a simple and great idea on itself…combined with the Good Morning Girls plan for myself I love the fellowship aspect. It reminds me of the old quote, “If you are not growing together in Christ, then you are growing apart.” (It was meant for marriages but the wisdom applies to family and friends…any relationship)
Thank you so much for this!
I may not have kids but this is great to do with Sunday School kids and for the kids at the Preschool I work at! I’m really looking forward to using this, and sharing it with people that I know that have kids.
Thank you so much for sharing!!!!!
Thank you thank you thank you on sharing a children’s version! Love this!
This is great! So many of the girls in my group have children. This is a great way to get everyone involved. This is also a great way to study for adults. Sometimes we don’t know where to go with a verse, but if we train ourselves to look for key words, it’s easier to grasp what God has for us in his Word.
THANKS!!!
Wonderful idea! I am going to use this!
This is great! I feel bad admitting this, but sometimes I get frustrated when my kids get up too early and crash my Bible study time. This will give me something to do with them from which we will all benefit. And I’ll not feel like they are intruding but actually along the journey with me. I love it when God puts tools in our path to help us accomplish His goals for us and our family. Thank you for this post.
I love this! My husband is going to be doing the Colossians study with me on the side, and this is a perfect way we can get our 8 year old son involved, too. He’s had a rough summer–his oldest sister got married in June and his next sister moved away to college in August. (Rough for mom and dad too!!) So, it’s like he became an only child! This will help him to feel included while we do our study!! Great resource!!
Thank you so much for this! Being a homeschooling mamma, and also about to begin the GMG Colossians SOAP, this is a wonderful way to incorporate my learnings with that of my children!
Great post! I love Shonda’s wonderful example of motherhood, spiritual awareness and gratefulness. Her blogs are great!
I love this idea! Thank you!
Shonda!! Thank you for the reminder that we can use such simple, yet life-changing skills that can take our children to that next level of spiritual growth. Oh, how I pray that my children will crave scripture as they grow, and that I will be a faithful example of how that looks by living it out in my own life!
Wow! Thus is really a great idea and so thoughtful of you of you to do this. Makes me wish my grandkids were closer so I could I could fo it with them!!
Thank you Shonda! I was already excited about this study and to find this gem to add and share with my kids! Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! I know this is sure to be a treasure! Angelia in TX
I love the idea of studying alongside our children! Since Week 1 is on FAITHFULNESS I thought this resource looked really great especially if your children are a little older. You could choose one thing or a few if you had more time. Lots of different verses suggested, object lessons…. bible stories that show faithfulness. You can take as much or as little as you want! : )

WEEK 2: RECONCILE might be more of a challenge! ; )
I tried to pick words that stood out as different, but manageable. Also, there was a little theme for each reading that goes with the word. Use whatever word works for you and your child. Someday they will need to know it, so it’s good to practice now!
Thank you so much. I’m new to bible studies so I can teach and learn about the bible at the same time. I’m looking forward to having this incorporated with our homeschool lessons.
Good post, and with some words, I think adults need this as much as kids. It took me a long time to think how to describe ‘Redeemer’.
There are two problems with what you wrote.
1. English word studies fail! Often times, the same Greek or Hebrew word is translated with a different english word. Because is is all about context. You may think by doing an english word study you are doing well, but you are not. To really study words in all their uses one must do an original language word study.
2. Never EVER look up a meaning for a word in the bible in an English dictionary! This is a very simplistic fact. Word meanings change, and words translated from Greek and Hebrew often times loose meaning in translation (because English is a very language). Tog find out how certain words were used in the time that the scripture was written, one Must use the appropriate biblical lexicon or theology dictionary. Else all you are doing is very shallow and potentially dangerous studying.
Thanks so very much!!!
Thank you for this study. I’m doing it with my daughter 7-yo. She loves it so much that, in 3 days we are already in week 4. She read everything and this is going to be the firt book of the Bible she’s going to read completely. She is writing wonderful prayers, very simple but wonderful and, I guess, very sincere. Thank you very much.
yay! I loved this.. so helpful! I know the kids will love it! thank you for this!
In Him,
Stevie

Absolutely wonderful!! Thanks for this idea. I have two daughters I’d love to use this with.
I LOVE THIS! I have a middle school daughter who is home schooled. This will be PERFECT… I hope there will be more of these!!
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web smart so I’m not 100% certain. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
