Today We Begin Week 1 ~ Colossians 1:1-14

Oh my word! I could explode with excitement just thinking about what God is going to do here at GoodMorningGirls.org over the next 8 weeks!!!

I dont’ know what he is going to do personally in your life but I know that if we are faithful to come to his word daily - we are going to be filled up with living water – and we will LIVE WELL!

God is going to speak to you personally.  He will speak into the dark secret areas of your soul that only you know need to be touched.  He is going to speak into the trials you are facing.  He is going to speak into your life!

Come to his word every morning with expectancy!

When we read and live out God’s word it changes the entire course of our lives!

I am in the middle of writing a book right now – and my editor says I use WAY too many dashes and exclamation points!  I just can’t help it!  There is no other way for me to express my enthusiasm!!!!!!!!

God still speaks today – and I know we all long to know God’s will for our lives.  God speaks through his word.

This week in your study you will see in verse 9 how to find the knowledge of God’s will.”

It says through:

1. Spiriual Wisdom

and

2. Understanding

If you want to know God’s will for your life – then open God’s word to Colossians with us.

Write down the Scripture passage – word for word –  just like the scribes of old used to do.

Then write out your Observations straight from that passage.  You will gain “spiritual wisdom“.

Then, write out your Applications and Prayers – and there you will find “Understanding”.

Spiritual Wisdom + Understanding = Knowledge of His Good Will

Now open your Bibles with me as we go through a 5 minute overview of this week’s passage in Colossians 1:1-14.

(if you cannot see this video - click here to view it)

The most repeated word in Colossians is the word “Christ” and the theme of this book is “Hope.”

As a challenge, I encourage you to mark key words or themes with colored pencils to help them pop off the page when you read through the text (there is no exact science to this – just mark what speaks to you – words like faith/faithful, hope, love, Christ and gospel should stand out).  I also encourage you to choose a favorite verse to memorize.

For additional research, go to these sources to find deep, enriching commentary work:

1. John Piper – The Fruit of Hope: Love

2. John MacArthur – Introduction Colossians

John MacArthur – The Gospel Truth Col. 1:3-8

John MacArthur – The Fruit of Knowledge Col. 9-11

John MacArthur – What Makes Christians Most Thankful Col. 1:12-14

3. C.H. Spurgeon – Colossians Chapter 1

So let’s get to it! Dig into Colossians, share what you are learning with your Good Morning Girls group -and if you do not have a group – consider the writers here at GMG your accountability group!  Tell us – what are you learning?

We’ll see you back here on Wednesday.

Walk with the King!

  16. As I read this morning the first thing that hit me were the words Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the WILL of God. When you seek God’s will then no matter the circumstances of life, good or bad, you can find peace and grace. Also verse 3 in reminding me to ALWAYS thank God in prayer for those who are faithful to Christ. I am so thankful for the people God has placed in my life. I look forward to tomorrow’s verses in the study.

  17. I’m excited to start this study. I’m due to have my second child this Friday, so I didn’t join a group (with a new baby and a toddler, I didn’t want to stress myself too much). I am very excited about the digital SOAP resource, and I do plan on discussing the study on my new blog for if anyone happens my way and wants to discuss something!(onepassionatewifeandmommie.blogspot.com).

  18. Alicia Lenoir says:

    • Hi – love, love your bible study links. I have some from time and was trying to access your archives for a few of them, since I left off at I John -excellent by the way — how can I retrieve them for study. I can’t open any of the links.
Thanks much –and blessings to all of the team for such wonderful work.
      I appreciate each of you!

  21. I too am excited about this study. The words that jumped out to me this morning are from vs. 2 – I pray that God our Father will be kind to you and will bless you with peace! The words just his home this morning. I use the Contemporary English Version so my wording will be different than the NIV.

  22. Thank you for this email and video. I am so excited about this study and sharing it with so many.

  23. All I can say is SUPER EXCITED!!!

  24. I am studying on my own,but do not have the study guide in my email, can u send the link, thk u

  26. I am very new to GMG and this is my first study with y’all. To be honest this is my first self-motivated study in years. I’m not sure what made me sign up, but I’m glad I did. I plan to be as faithful as possible with this. Even if I can’t finish it on time (I’m due to give birth before it’s over) I WILL finish.

Already this morning I have discovered a few things. How much more will I take in from God’s Word by writing down the Scriptures, word for word? How much have I been skipping over without actually taking it in? How many opportunities have I passed up by not “praying always” (as it says in verse 3)? Why don’t I do this more often?

That is already my goal for this week (and ongoing). To pray always. Make that effort to always be in His Spirit.

Thank you so much for this. I look forward with great anticipation to see what God shows me through this study.

  27. I blogged about this!! Wonderful resources!!

  28. Amber Oatman says:

Thank you so much for that encouraging word! I am sooo looking forward to this study of Colossians. Im so excited after watching the video this morning that its hard not to just read the whole book right now lol. Thank you!

  29. Verse 3: “We thank God…when we pray for you because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints.” Wow! What a reputation those Colossians had!! Lord, give ME that reputation! Angela and Courtney, thank you so much for organizing yet another great study! You girls are so appreciated!!

  30. Just wanted you all to know that I’m going to do a special “extra” blog post tomorrow, showing the steps to subscribe to our blog so you will be getting the M-W-F blog posts!!!! For those of you confused……that post tomorrow is for you!!!!! :)

  31. A) This morning, I read the passage before I saw the video. That they were known for their love of all the saints stood out to me. Sometimes loving other Christians can be challenging. I pray that my love for all the saints is evident.
    B) Then I saw your video and I enjoyed your analogy of being marked. I do long to be a sucker for God!
    Thanks, Courtney!
And thanks again for a great Bible study that is so rich and also free at the same time!

  32. Does GMG suggest a particular translation of the bible for this study (NIV, KJV, etc)?

  33. LOVING this! Started my week off with encouragement and the challenge to live a life of faith & love! Thanks so much for creating this great community of study!

  34. Michelle S. says:

This post says we’re reading 1-14, but the bookmark and study guide show 1-4. Which is correct? Also, what is the scripture passage? Do I pick a verse from each day’s reading that speaks to me?

  35. I have subscribed, but I have not gotten the link to the study documents

  36. Off to an excellent start. I am praying that all who have signed up for this course will be able to complete this 100%. For me, especially since I used to be just a starter and not a finisher, but the Mighty Finisher is my strength and so am I now a finisher!! WOOOHOOO!!! God is Awesome!!!!

  37. I think we should start this study by reading firt the introduction to Colossians by John MacArthur so that we get the idea what it is all about. I just did it and i feel blessed and enlightened. Christ is all in all and that’s all that matters. By the way, I’m so exited and filled with joy to be the part of this Colossians Bible Study :D. Grace and peace to all of you :)

  38. Ok – I just had to laugh at your comment about using WAY too many dashes and exclamation points! :) We truly must be related!! :) Though – as you can see – my family also says I use way too many smiley faces as well. :) :) :)
    {they are just jealous that I’m so happy all the time! hee,hee}

    Abundant Blessings!

    Lori :)

  39. Manuela Hester says:

I am excited about this study but it’s my first time with GMG so I am hoping that I am doing this right lol… I have the study guide and the reading plan. Sooo I assume that is what I am supposed to follow. Is that correct. Is there anything that I am missing? Thanks and God Bless

  45. Thank you for linking all those commentaries. I am slowly, but surely working my way through them. Thank you for all that you do for us! You are changing lives.

  46. I just loved today! I prayed this verse over my family today. There is power over praying over our family throughout the day. verse 9 really spoke to me this morning! I will work on memorizing it for my family.

I continually ask God to fill Andy, Jack, Blake and Benjamin with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that Andy, Jack, Blake and Benjamin may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God!

This has been amazing for me so far! Thank you!!!!
