The Proverbs 31 Woman~Week 5

We are up to week 5 of the Proverbs 31 Woman Series!

This week we are looking at verses 17 & 18

17 She sets about her work vigorously;
Her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.

I was going write and add a little to what I shared in the video – then I got so chatty in the video (it was longer than I meant it to be. lol! I guess this series really lights my fire!) that I think I covered it all!

This week’s challenge is to JOIN ME – in memorizing the entire Proverbs 31 passage.

I made a printable so we can print a few copies and keep them around. I encourage you to keep the verses on your kitchen counter, in your purse, folded in your Bible (read it first thing before you have your quiet time), on your nightstand or in your bathroom. If you read it a few times a day – you’ll be surprised how quickly you pick it up!

  4. Thanks for this! I’m excited to memorize this passage of scripture. I have so enjoyed this Study and thank you for making it available. I was just thinking of the part that says “her lamp does not go out at night” and I always took it to mean that the Prov. 31 woman is always aware of what’s going on in her home and is available, if and when needed. I’ve not interpreted it as meaning she goes to bed really late or doesn’t sleep much. In my home, although I sleep (and I need 8 hours to be able to function), I am still aware of what’s going on in my home at all hours. I am listening for the children if they cry or need me, etc… So, I’m sleeping, but yet aware and available at all hours. :)

Hi, thanks for all that you provide. We are having a great conversation about these verses on our FB group page. ;-) This week struck something in me that was helpful and made me laugh.

A year ago my sister & I created a video about housework and exercise. We called “A90X.” My parents left the Amish church when we were children and we were raised always very close and still are with our amish family…so this is not to be “mean” to them…they have seen it & loved it.

This is combining P90X and housework for a good woorkout…in a humorous and very clean way! It’s even subtitled b/c we soke Pennsylvania Dutch throughout. haha Enjoy!

  6. The lamp that does “not go out at night” – my pastor explained that in those days people would have to get up to add fuel to the pot (like the oil lamp with wicks you can get a Lowe’s for example, you can’t let the oil get low or the wick will burn out) in order to keep their lamps burning because the fire from those lamps was used for lighting, but also for starting fires for cooking and house warming. So – even if she did not stay awake “all night”, she worked hard to train herself to stay up late enough, or to get up from sleep to add fuel to the fire so that her home would be lit, warm and fed. This one little act of keeping the lamp lit shows her diligence in providing for her family’s needs in various ways!

  7. Elizabeth – I LOVED your video. Very clever (& funny)! Good work!

  8. To be humble and follow his asking of us to rise early, set about her work in fields or house, her arms holding strong with task at hand and keeping oil lit at night…..wow! I have often been amazed at my mother for taking care of house, kids and working as much as she still found time to come to our events and games in school, that sometimes went late into the night. Now as a parent myself….I often struggle with such a drain of life as te day comes to an end and I am making dinner.

  9. Jennifer says:

It’s interesting to hear about the lamp burning into the night – when I read that verse, it spoke to me that this virtuous women kept her home in order and always had enough. If her lamp was able to burn into the night, she had prepared it well to keep it going. She had to buy the oil (she budgeted enough) and fill the lamp (she wasn’t lazy and using less than she needed to). Never even dawned on me about “special Projects”… Isn’t it amazing that the Lord speaks through His word so differently to us?

  10. I have one question: If the Proverbs 31 woman is continually working both day and night, when does she have time to spend with her husband? Here our evenings after the children have gone to bed are when my husband and I spend time together.

Also, when reading this passage in the past, I always thought of her lamp does not go out at night to mean that she has worked hard during the day to sustain her lamp.

  11. Just wondering if you had a “free” version of this printable? I would love to print it and have it in several places but it’s requiring payment to download/print it. Thank you:)
