(Week 9} 1 John 4:7-21 God’s Love and Ours

This week we will be reading about God’s love toward us and how we are to express that love to others. I recently found this video clip of a young woman who brought me to tears. She is an inspiration to me and I hope to you as well.

(If you can’t see this video- click here.)

I wanted to be like her when I was younger. I wanted to go off to another country and make a BIG difference for God just like she is in Uganda. Unlike Katie though I wasn’t as brave….or maybe it wasn’t God’s will, but either way I LOVE the difference she is making in those children’s lives. Whether abroad or in our own country, we can ALL make a BIG difference for God. Where I’ve had to confess to God this week is in my fear of not trying. Between you and me, I hate to FAIL! Absolutely hate it! I hate it so much that it paralyzes me into not stepping out on faith because of my fear that I won’t do well. It kills me when I disappoint people. Have you ever been like that?

I took a mission trip to the Ukraine my Junior year in high school and I remember coming back from that trip and saying to myself, “From now on I’m going to trust God more with my life! I’m going to give God more opportunities to really work through me so that I can see Him more and so others can see Him through me.” Of course “life” happened when I came back and well here I am now (I won’t say how many years later…hehehe) happily married and blessed with 3 precious little girls……and yet I still have that same desire in my heart. I want to trust God more with the life He has given me. I still want to make that BIG difference for Him….and I don’t want to be afraid anymore. I want to love others. I want to love the family, friends and neighbors He has given me the way He tells me to: to love others as though they were me. I think I might have some changes I need to make in my life…..I know I need to pray about the HOW God wants me to reach out more, but I know that He does. I’ll keep you posted as to my progress.:)

  1. Angela, I can’t get the link to work to download the study guide. Can you email it to me, please?

  2. I thought that the video was about my cousin (Katie) she just cam back from Africa. I was like that’s my cousin!!! But alas it is not.. another Katie in Africa… ;)

I use to think I could only be important and really used if I went on a missions trip. The older I get and the more I see my girls grow I realize that I have a mission field right in my own House my own tribe to disciple and nuture and feed. I realized to be faithful right where i am at. That is what our jobs are right now. I will be content where I am at because if I don’t things get real ugly with my flesh (ya know). I never want to think that if I never get to go on a global missions trip that I never did my call for the Lord or that I was a failure. He is in control Amen? Amen!! He just calls us to be FAITHFUL Amen Angela.
Love to u ladies this week! Kelly from believingin1

  3. A lot of my friends and my family member are reading her book that is about her life and what she is doing in Africa and they absolutely love it! I would love to read it too someday. I was like that way once (and i know I still am) I went to many mission trips when I was in high school and I was attending Seminary school for my college degree so I can be a missionary. Along the way, we ran into a family emergency with my husband’s side of the family, and have a beautiful baby girl now.
Right now I’m back in school at CCU doing online classes so I can pursue God’s calling. We’ve been reading Courage & Calling by Gordon T. Smith. I highly recommend reading this book! What you mentioned on your blog is said in his book and it is so encouraging to know that God has a calling into your life and wants you to pursue it!

  4. Hi Just Jenn- try the link out now and see if you can download it. :) Make sure you have Adobe Reader too because you’ll need it in order to read the file. :)

Hi Kelly- You are so right, our 1st mission field is our families. I 100% agree. :) But what I personally forget to do is put myself in situations where I have to trust God more. A person’s mission field doesn’t have to be to another country. It can be in our homes, with our neighbors, in another state, in our child’s school, in a hospital, in a nursing home…the areas are endless…we just have to be obedient and GO. :)

Hi Alicia- Thanks so much for the recommendation! I’ll have to try and pick that book up when I am done with Katie’s. :)

  5. I just finished that book and it is a MUST READ! I put it on my list of favorite books that I read this year. Captivating and thought provoking. Makes my life with just 2 kids seem so easy! (Which it is not, by the way). Katie has such a strong and unbelievable faith and her story is just incredible. I couldn’t put it down.

  6. Oh Ang – I LOVED this video! I just saw her book at the bookstore this week! It looks like an amazing read!

Angela – you are an inspiration – you have touched more lives than you’ll ever know and you have encouraged me so much to keep going when I’ve been weary and SCARED! I know the fear you speak of – I wrestle with it too!!! Go forward in faith girlfriend – you are not alone!
    Love you,
    Courtney

  7. I LOVE how you touched on our mission field being everywhere and anywhere we are. You know, I’ve been on the mission field (Eastern Europe) for nearly 13 years and used to think that was a good excuse for being too scared to reach out in love after some initial rejection… but the call is the same. No matter where I am, here, home, or another field. I have been guilty of not trying myself. Thanks for the reminder! I want to trust God more with my life too. Prayers on your behalf,
    Shelly

  8. I LOVE how you touched on the fact that our mission field is everywhere and anywhere we are. You know, I’ve been on the mission field (Eastern Europe) for nearly 13 years and I used to think that was a good excuse for being too scared to reach out in love after some initial rejection, after all I had gone to the mission field, right? But the call is the same. No matter where I am, here, home, or another field. Thanks for the reminder to keep trying! I want to trust God more with the life he’s given me!! Prayers on your behalf,
    Shelly

  9. I really enjoyed your post, thank you!!!

  10. Shonda- I have another book that I’m working on finishing right now, but Katie’s book is next in line! ;) So glad to hear that you loved it too! :)

  11. What an amazing and wonderful story. The world eould be a different place if everyone loved as Katie loves.

  12. Thankyou for this challenging post Angela (and God for Your Word!). My life has recently been turned around and a new mission field has been placed before me, and you have reminded me to go in full force for God, taking His opportunities to share His Love and His Heart, and to keep trusting in Him as I step out of my comfort zones into His Beauty and His Plan.
    Thanks xx
