{Week 10} Are You Going to Heaven?

I LOVE this week’s passage because it answers the question:
How Can I Know if I’m going to Heaven?”

I remember sitting with an elderly woman long ago and talking about Jesus and my salvation. She looked hard at me and said “you mean to tell me at the age of 25 you can arrogantly say you are going to heaven?”

I could sense her disgust with me for saying such a thing - I nodded sheepishly and said – “yes mam, I John 5:12 says ‘He who has the Son has life; and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.’ I have placed my faith in Jesus and the Bible tells me I have eternal life.”

Have you ever been challenged by someone in the same way?  Our confidence in our salvation can be found in I John 5:12 – this is definitely one to commit to memory!

I John 5:13 continues to give us security – it goes on in the passage…

”I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may KNOW that you have eternal life.”

That’s it right there!  If you have repented of your sin and placed your faith in Jesus Christ as the son of God – you can KNOW without a shadow of a doubt – you have eternal life.

Randy Alcorn, the author of Best Seller Heaven, answered the question “How Can I Know I’m going to heaven?”:

Just for fun I thought I’d include another of Randy’s videos answering questions like:

Where is Heaven?  What’s the new heaven and new earth like?  What will our bodies be like?  And how do we grieve saved loved ones?

Doesn’t all this talk about eternal life excite you?  I can’t wait to see God face to face!!!  What a glorious day that will be!

Walk with the King!

  1. Right now I’m going through something really sad and it probably sounds crazy to anyone who doesn’t have faith in Jesus Christ, but my hope in an eternal life with God, is the only thing that is keeping me going right now. I long for that day to come soon, but I trust in God’s perfect timing and until then I try to wait patiently for His return.

It’s hard to imagine, but it makes me smile to know that someday I will never feel sad or scared or lonely again. Someday I will be able to hug Jesus and cry and dance and sing in perfect happiness!

I love this song by Mercy Me-I can only imagine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xwzItqYmII

  2. Oh Amber – I’m so sorry :( Yes – cling to Jesus in the hard times – his mercies are new every morning.
    Much Love,
    Courtney

  3. I can’t say that I have ever been challenge like you were (wow!) but funny enough my mom and I spoke about this yesterday. And I was telling her that in my heart I can honestly say that if I died today I would be ready because I have confessed my sins, and He has forgiven me. I feel it in my heart. And I do believe like you that because I follow him I will go to Heaven. And yes! I can wait to see the face of God! :)

  4. You can make me doubt a lot of things, but you will never make me doubt that my God is the Savior of the world. – Beth Moore

Beth just posted that as her status minutes ago!! And it is so true!!

I was thinking of salvation today, heaven and hell in particular. Because I was at mother in law’s home… I saw buddhist pictures and a little alter with statues.
I was a “little” shocked but deeply saddened and prayed for her.
She used to be a hardcore Christian but my sis in law who is a buddhist is really close to MIL. I’m sure her influence rubbed off. It’s so sad and scary to see her lose her salvation if she doesn’t repent and come back to God. I prayed and prayed for her. AND that is all I can do. I can’t preach to her because she is my MIL and I need to respect her. Only God can humble her and bring her back…. He is the judge.

Thank you for this post. It came right on time while I was thinking and praying. TY. \

  5. Love LOVE Randy Alcorn.
My pastor here in Salem, OR is great friends with Mr. Alcorn who also lives nearby in Oregon! Thank you for sharing the video clips… perfect application with the I John 5 study.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  6. Contemplating eternal life is definitely a comforting thing when we’re going through the hardships of this earth. I try to remember that in this place I can earn merits that will assist me on that road to heaven.. those very same hardships.. if I bear them with grace and do everything I can with love and for love of Him I can shorten the time in purgatory (Catholics believe in purgatory as a place where we must be purified and perfected before we can enter Heaven). Can you imagine standing in the presence of God, of standing in the presence of His perfect, all-encompassing love?

My mil has struggled with the idea of death and fear of what happens next. Thank God she is coming to that place of absolute belief in eternal life. She has survived cancer of the kidney for the past 6 years but is going through some illness that suggests it may have come back, so it is so important that she believes this!

Amber Rose (I love that name!) I hope that God comforts you and helps you to deal with your sadness. I love that song too!

God bless and have a wonderful weekend!

  7. Wow! So bold to post this because so many Christians beleive in so many different ways to be “saved”. John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.’ I don’t believe that “accept Jesus into your heart” or “simply believe” saves you because James 2:19 says “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder.” I know we don’t think demons will be saved becasue they believe! Instead the Bible says in John 7:38 “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” Finally, I personally don’t believe that once saved always saved. I believe that this is a race to those that continue well.

  8. Pondering… considering… questioning… What does it mean exactly to HAVE the Son of God? HOW do we HAVE Jesus? HOW do we NOT?

  9. I’ve been that challenge to myself – I would say to myself: How arrogant, or isn’t it arrogant to say I “know” I’m going to heaven? – looking back, that is actually “fruit” that proved I still thought of going to heaven as based on “works” – why else would I think it was a “boast”??(Eph.2:9) – that is so good!! Glory to GOD. :P

But when I really began to walk with the King, I saw that my receiving God’s free gift, and now living by the faith of the son of God (Gal 2:20) was just liking being married! I had a wedding day, I have a marriage certificate that says I am married – forever. But I have to “be” married every day. I have to choose to love my husband, and serve him, and be faithful to him, and NOT divorce him. I’m not arrogant when I say, “I’m married”. What I’m stating is: I’m in a covenant relationship with a man as my husband, and I as his wife.

When I say I am saved, I am going to heaven, I am saying: I’m married! I’m in a convenant relationship with my Heavenly Husband, and I as his Bride. He’s on a business trip right now, but he’s doing double duty building us a home that we will live in together forever in Heaven. I’m here keeping the home fires burning, and inviting his friends and family to join us in our new country he is conquering and taking back from an evil enemy every day.

Confidence is not arrogance. I am confident in God’s ability and his promises. I am confident in his Person – he is not a man that he should lie. He’s my husband, and I trust him. :)

  10. I love love love this verse of scripture! We can place our trust in God and His promises and be not scared or fearful. The Bible teaches us that faith castes away all fear. I can’t wait to see, hear, and feel God’s Presence. I hope to see you there too Courtney! I would love to meet you; we will probably be good friends, you are a woman after my own heart.
    Love, Aubrey
