Week 2 – I John 1:5-10 ~ God Is Light

Welcome back to week 2 of our study in the book of I John!

If you are joining us a week late, here is a link to the Free E-study guide - download and print it or use it as a guide as your write in your own journal!

Let’s get started by looking at this week’s key words in I John 1:5-10.  Remember there is no right or wrong way to do this.  Mark the words that you see repeated often or that mean something to you.  You can use colors or symbols.

I like to use a yellow triangle to represent the Trinity  - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  I used green for “fellowship”,  a  red blood droplet for “blood”, yellow for “light” and a black lightening bolt for “sin”.  I also marked the word “claim” pink and the words “lie”, “liar” and “deceive” brown.

Verse 9 is underlined because it is a key verse that I memorized long ago.  I highly recommend you commit this verse to memory.  It is a very comforting verse for myself when I have messed up, for my children when they have done wrong and for counseling situations.

If you have quickly completed the SOAP assignment for the day and still have time left – we recommend that you do commentary work.  Commentaries are books, sermons or devotionals that study each verse in its context.  Look at how much depth these men of God found in these few short verses!!!

Here are 3 on-line commentaries I recommend for the week to go along with this weeks reading:

1. John McArthur – The Certainty of Sin ~ I John 1:5-2:1

2. John Piper - Let Us Walk In the Light of God (This was my favorite link)

3. Charles Spurgeon - The Child of Light Walking in Light - I John 1:6,7; Walking In Light and Washed In the Blood – I John 1:8-10

Remember, the above reading and key word marking is optional!  If all you can get done is the SOAP study – then “high 5″ to you for getting into God’s word today! Do not feel pressured to do more!

Remember,  This is a place of grace – women from all walks of life are here!  We know you are busy – too busy to not have God’s wisdom to carry you through out the day.  Work on squeezing this time in and remain consistent in your study – do it morning, noon or night!

Remember, Even when you miss a day of your quiet time, it’s important that you stay connected to your group.  It is very easy to lose fellowship if you do not remain committed to your accountability group.  Be honest.  Say you are struggling – I KNOW they will lift you up in prayer!  And Girls – we ALL need more prayer – don’t we?

I’m lifting you all up in prayer this week!  I’ll be back here on Wednesday and Friday – so stop back!  Now dig in and enjoy!

Walk with the King!

  1. Courtney, Thank you for sharing God’s light in your life. It is such an encouragement.

I was wondering if any of the resources you post for us are available in book form? I know that if I open the computer during my quiet time I will end up reading the news and getting distracted. I think I will print some of these for now, but it’d be nice to have a paper copy.

  2. Courtney! Great post. Thanks for all the great info and encouragement. Just wanted to let you know the link for the study guide goes to the Walking in the Light, Washed in the Blood commentary.

  3. Brittany – yes, John McArthur has an excellent commentary on the book of I John that you could purchase here: http://www.gty.org/products/Commentaries/431044_13-John-Commentary-Hardcover

  7. Did this mornings SOAP, plus a couple other things in my new quiet time routine… Then we got a call this am about an issue we have been fighting for almost 2 months… By standing firm and doing what is right and what God asks us to do, things worked out for us! God IS light! This was such an encouraging morning! I struggle to sometimes remember that there is no darkness in God, and this verse plus the amazing breakthrough, just proved to me, once again, that God is in control and He is the Light!!!

Thank you Courtney for this study and group! Although I do not like the symbols in my Bible, I do use them when I write out my verse for the day! :) I have added a couple… whenever I see proclaim/testify/declare/share (anytime they are sharing the gospel or saying what God has done) I underline it in light blue… Anytime there is one of our 5 senses, I underline it in red/orange! It is amazing how many times we are to proclaim/share God’s word! And how He uses our many senses to help us understand Him!

  8. Hello Good MOrning Girl!
I’m Marcela from Illinois and I am doing the study on my own. I have to wonderful girlfriends and we are reading and discussing 1 Corinthians. Courtney, thank you for this study and for your encouraging videos. God has definately blessed you with the gift of encouragement to other women. Thank you for your ministry and for your beautiful example in your obedience to God’s purpose for your life! This week’s reading has convicted me that much more on God’s promises and that Jesus Christ is the one and only source of true fulfillment and joy and that our joy is complete when we share the good news through our example! This is powerful and life changing. Only when we are truly ready and our heart is open do we finally “get it”! I get it! I finally get it!

  9. Just finished my study for the day. Got a late start after a traveling weekend but as always… gleaned from His Word. I love writing down the observations and applications and the prayer, plus the verse.

I am so thankful for this study.

    Joyful & thankful.

  10. Courtney, Thank you so much! I’m going to order that right now!

  11. Angela Prince says:

Was late starting this devotion last week but now I am trying to commit to it and enjoy the blessings from the word of God. Thank you for being a committed disciple and encouraging other women.
