{Week 5} Ministry of Motherhood Chapters 5 & 6 Commentary

Week 5 of our Ministry of Motherhood book club is coming to an end today! My prayer is that you were encouraged this week as you read chapters 5 & 6. In today’s video Courtney and I discuss the Ministry of Motherhood summer bible studies that have recently begun in our homes as well as our favorite part of this week’s reading.

Chapter 5

One of the biggest points that stuck out to me in chapter 5 was this quote from Sally:

“…we get lost in these multitudinous tasks that rule our lives, and we lose sight of the underlying purpose behind all these tasks, which is to prepare our children to go into the world and make disciples for our Lord.”- Sally Clarkson

I love how Sally talks about pointing out the skills and talents God has given each of our children to be used to glorify Him. Teaching our children that their lives are not their own, but that they should be good stewards of the skills God has given them and the ultimate goal our their lives is to bring glory to God.

“Each of our children has been given a specific personality and a particular set of circumstances that will give shape to God’s purpose for his or her life.”- Sally Clarkson

I think as mothers we need to have this reminder too, that God specifically made each of our children with the exact personality and temperament He did for them to glorify Him later in their lives. I know some days certain aspects of their personalities can drive us crazy, but let’s try to remember God made them this way for a reason…..our job is to help direct our children to develop their skills and personalities in ways that will one day bring glory to Him. We may not like that stubborn streak that we see some days…….but our child may need to have that in order to accomplish and not give up on what God has called him or her to.

Something I have recently begun saying to my daughters each night when we have some one-on-one time together is just what Sally mentions on page 68, “I wonder how God will use you in the world.” It’s so important for our children to know God does have a purpose for their life……they each have a very important role in His story.

Chapter 6

For those of you who have older children, I thought this quote from Sally was so important to share with your children.

“With all the skills, background, and personality the Lord has given me, how can I best serve him and tell others about his kingdom? What job should I pursue so that I may serve him best in all that I do?”- Sally Clarkson

I love how she challenges us to keep our focus on what is eternal instead of what is ordinary and will one day pass away.

Another favorite quote was…

“…God is not measuring them by how much money they make, what kind of car they drive, or how big a house they are able to buy. By God’s standards, our children will be successful in life if they are willing to love and follow Christ wherever they are asked to go. And this is an attainable goal. What he has called us to do he will give us the ability to complete.” – Sally Clarkson

All I can add to the above quote is an “Ahem!!!”

Now it’s your turn to share! What touched your heart the most this week as we read chapters 5 & 6? What encouraged you?

For those of you who don’t have a group yet, feel free to join Courtney and I on Facebook or Twitter each day- we will be your group for you.

  1. Its so great to watch these videos with the two of you. You emanate so much joy and Christ’s light is shining brightly out through you. Thank you for sharing so much of your hearts and lives with us.

I am learning so much in this study and I truly feel that God is taking me to even greater places to soak up more and be the person He wants me to be. I love Sally’s stories about her children and the way she dealt with situations is just such an inspiration to me. Through this I feel like I actually have tools to use in my own situations that I never would have thought of before. It has come at a really appropriate time since we are at a crossroads with one of our daughters. Hard choices need to be made about what direction her life should go now that she has graduated. I am living what I am learning..praise be to God!

Thank you for all that you are doing to make this study come alive. God bless you both and your families as well!

  2. Angela I think that the VBS idea is great. I was frustrated at not being about afford or attend VBS with my little guys and recently decided to do VBS at home. They love it and I feel great being about to share the gospel with my young men.

  3. I like how grace comes before inspiration in this story…because that was my own journey. I became radical for Christ after he wooed my with his passionate love and I experienced acceptance in Him. How can we count the cost a *go for it* if we have not known His Love? But if you know His Love, you can give it all up. This is my prayer for my children–that they wd know and experience His Love.

  4. Courtney I love the idea to tell the children storys with their nicknames how they could serve God. This is such a great idea that I will try that right away!

And I love your idea wiht the bible studies, Angela. Unfortunately that is one thing that I can’t really do here as the book is not (yet) translated into German. But the idea of a bible study group is working in me very much at the moment. We will see!

    Have a wonderful weekend!
    Greetings from Germany.
    Katja

  5. Lisa Maria- I love the examples Sally shares too! Praying for your family and your daughter as looks ahead to her future! Praying for wisdom & open/closed doors. :)

LaToya- Way-to-go LaToya! Your little guys are so blessed to have you as their mom! :) You’re doing a great job! :)

Holly- Ohhhh I love what you said today! I totally agree, many times those who are most in love with Jesus are those who have felt His love and forgiveness. Jesus even talks about it in the story of the pharisee and the prostitute.

Katja- Love having you join us from Germany! Keep praying about the bible study and God will lead you.

    Love God Greatly!

  6. Loved this encouragement on raising our children to be godly before seeking worldly success. It can be easy, as Angela said, to be focused on the straight A’s or career path, when our hearts should be intent on helping them be who God planned for them to be.

Loving this study, it has blessed me so much already!
