{Week 4} Ministry of Motherhood Book Club

I can’t believe we are starting week 4 today in our Ministry of Motherhood book club with Sally Clarkson! This session is going so fast! This week we will be reading about the gift of encouraging words and the gift of forgiveness in action! Two very important gifts to give to our children!

Below I share two of my favorite quotes, one from each chapter that we will be reading this week.

“How important it is, then, that we mothers, shepherds of our children’s lives and hearts, choose our words to them carefully. We must deliberately aim our words at their hearts in such a way as to give our children hope, faith, strength, and also to point them toward the redeeming love of Christ. We can become the affirming voice of God to our children, just as we become a picture of his redeeming reality in their everyday lives. In this way we extend the gift of grace.”- Sally Clarkson

I know for me personally, words are very powerful. They can make me feel like I’m soaring high in the sky or they can make me feel like I’m a complete failure. I would describe myself as a person who loves words of affirmation and encouragement. I have one daughter just like me and I have to be very careful when I discipline her to choose my words very carefully. She gets crushed very easily, just like her mama, by words that are spoken to harshly or to carelessly. But to be honest with you, I think we need to be careful with our words with everyone we speak too. I’m not a person who believes in “speaking her mind.” The bible tells us in James Chapter 3 that we need to learn to tame our tongues. People my say that they aren’t sensitive to harsh words that are spoken to them, but I believe those harsh words still damage the individual they are directed towards whether that individual will admit to it or not. Our words can be life giving or life taking. It all depends on how we use them. Words are very powerful…….God teaches us that important lesson at the very beginning of the bible. Sally reminds us of this truth at the beginning of chapter 3 when she says, “The whole universe came into being because God spoke the words.” She goes on to say that Jesus himself is even described as “The Word of God.” God teaches us by those two examples that words are very powerful. This week lets focus on choosing our words carefully and speaking words to our children that give hope, faith, strength and ultimately point them to God.

“Giving our children this gift of forgiving grace can transform their lives by helping them understand that a relationship with God is not something that can be earned by good behavior but a free gift to be accepted with gratitude and repentance.”- Sally Clarkson

Teaching our children from the beginning that God doesn’t expect them to be perfect is so important to their foundation of faith. Taking that pressure off of them helps our children to embrace God and see him as a loving Father figure. We are never going to be “good enough” to EARN God’s forgiveness. Forgiveness is a gift from God because He loves us. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches us this important lesson: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. Each time our children disobey us, we are given an opportunity to teach them this important lesson. Are we to hold our children to a high behavior and moral standard? Of course, but we are also to help teach our children about grace and forgiveness…how to receive it and how to give it. Two important lessons that will help them when they become adults, get married and have children of their own.

Today we are going to watch part 2 of Sally’s video on the Gift of Grace.

  1. Hello Angela, The quotes you share from the book are the same ones that touched me as well, in fact Sally’s words ALL struck deep into my heart as I know (especially after doing the James study) that controlling my tongue is one of my biggest challenges. I will include one other: “Words of instruction and training are indeed necessary to our children, but we must be careful not to discourage them through nagging, criticism and reprimands. Even more important, we must balance our correction with words of encouragement and affirmation, words that our precious little ones will treasure in their hearts throughout their whole lives.”

I just want to thank you for the effort you’re making to making this study come alive. You must be really exhausted.. I remember what its like to be pregnant with other little ones running around and still have a house to run and chores to do. I think God must truly be blessing you for being so selfless in giving of your time to us as well. I pray that you and your family are well. God Bless!

  2. Thanks Sally! Love your thoughts here, and the reminder that giving the gift of grace is really giving my girls the gift of relationship!

  3. why do I always weep through these videos! Thanks girls and thank you SALLY!

    I really loved this story!

  4. That video touched my heart, as did chapter 2 of the book. I was raised in very legalistic type churches where a lot of heaven/hell messages were taught, and it was hard to see God as anything other than One who demanded constant perfection without sin, One who was out to get me (I know that sounds strange, but it’s something I’ve struggled with over the years); it was hard for me to perceive Him as my loving Heavenly Father. This is encouraging to my soul, as I’ve been struggling with Who God is to me and how to show my kids that God truly loves them, more than they could ever imagine. God is a God of grace, and that is becoming very real to me as I’m following along in this study. Thank you so much, Sally. You have written a book that is a light to my soul, as well as many others I’m sure.

  5. Mary Meyer says:

This book club is a god sent! Just today my six year old little boy asked if any children are perfect and are great kids every day. This is about a half hour after being put in time out for not following directions.
Since I had read about the gift of grace I was given the tools to teach him that no one is perfect and we all make mistakes. That God gives us these moments to learn and do better next time. Also, that I still love him when he makes mistakes but it is mommy’s job to help him do better and know that he will be forgiven.

I just want to thank you so much for the time and energy to put this together!

  6. Beautiful! I sure do feel guilty for not looking at the fireflies with my daughter tonight. I am thankful that tomorrow is another day and God will extend His grace to me again, so that I may do better.

  7. Thanks, Sally, Angela and Courtney!

I just watched this latest video clip from Sally Clarkson, and I did cry when she told the story of her son taking her up to see the sunset and wanting so much to share that special place and special moment with his mother. And then to tell her, that he would always remember that moment!

Such a colorful illustration of true love and grace in a relationship. I just pray that I will show that much grace to my own kids!

  8. Lisa V. says:

Already I am seeing and feeling the fruit of this study. I have taken so many times more than I used to to just be with my son when he seeks my time and attention. The sweetness that oozes out of that boy when I’m there for him makes my heart beat with happiness and joy. I feel God has me on this wonderful learning track right now. I feel like I’m fulfilling the role God has for me as a Mom. I’m so excited to continue to learn through this study.

  9. Magnificent site. A lot of useful info here. I am sending it to some buddies ans additionally sharing in delicious. And of course, thank you on your sweat!
