We are starting WEEK 5 in our James Study! Last week we talked about how we are not to show favoritism but rather to love our neighbors as ourselves. As Christians, we are called to extend mercy instead of judgment. This week we are going to learn how our faith needs to be accompanied with ACTION. I can’t wait to get started!
Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
(Note: if you are viewing this through your email, make sure to go to our blog today because this post includes a video.)
Week 5 Challenge: The challenge for this week is to decide as a group how you want to put James 2:17 into action. Report back on Friday, commenting on Courtney’s post how your group is planning on participating in this challenge. This is a team effort! Big or small, we all make a difference for these girls TOGETHER!
You have from now until April 15th to do this GMG group challenge. Once your group has done the challenge, I’d like for you to either make a video that we can share on our GMG site or have someone in the group send an email to me at email@example.com telling me how as a group you put God’s Words into action by helping the Mercy House. If you could attach a picture to the email that would be SUPER! I will then start sharing the videos and emails on our GMG as they come in!
This challenge begins today, and ends Friday, April 15th.
The Mercy House Mission Statement:
The Mercy House exists to provide alternative options for pregnant girls living in the streets of Kenya. The Mercy House will aid them in nutrition, housing, prenatal care, counseling, Biblical teaching and job skills for sustainable living.
The Mercy House has approved 501c3 status.
Who Is Behind The Mercy House?
The blogger behind The Mercy House and We Are THAT Family, traveled to Kenya, Africa, in March of 2010 with Compassion International, the world’s largest child sponsorship program, to blog their relief efforts in the slums of Nairobi. She was especially burdened visiting the Mathare Valley, one of Africa’s largest slums. Just days after returning home, Kristen read a heartbreaking article by CNN about the large number of backstreet abortions by girls forced into prostitution to feed their families.
While in Kenya, Kristen met Maureen, one of Compassion’s leadership students, a former sponsored child. Maureen is single, 25 years old and will graduate from the University of Nairobi in December 2010. She speaks 5 languages and traveled to the Unites States in the summer of 2010 on behalf of Compassion International to speak to thousands of students at Student Life Camps. Her moving life story led to the sponsorship of more than a thousand impoverished children.
She has since become a very dear friend of the Welch family. Just weeks after returning from Africa, Kristen emailed Maureen and asked if she knew of any ministries reaching out or offering an alternative to the young girls having backstreet abortions. She didn’t know of any. Both women began to pray about this need and 4 months later the dream of a Mercy House for these girls was birthed.

Ways we can help:
Pray-most importantly please pray for these women as God lays them upon your heart. Pray for their protection, for God’s wisdom as they make important decisions pertaining to The Mercy House and the girls that God will send.
Donate- if you are a crafty person or if you already sell your own items on Etsy you might want to consider donating items for their Etsy store. They are taking ongoing or one-time donations to their Etsy store. Not only will your donation(s) benefit the work of the Mercy House in Kenya, it will also bring your store/site some added exposure. For more information click here.
Give-as a group or individually, you can choose to give a one time donation, monthly donations or purchase specific items for the house like beds, mattresses, a refrigerator, tables & chairs, sewing machines etc. To find out more ways to give click here.
Spread the news- tell your friends and family about the Mercy House!
- Don’t forget to leave a comment to enter the Mercy House t-shirt giveaway, I will close comments on Friday at midnight and announce the winner next Monday.
- Discuss this week with your GMG groups how you would like to participate in our winter challenge and leave a comment on Courtney’s Friday post letting us know how your group plans on participating! Can’t wait to hear what you all come-up with!
