Week 5 Vlog, Winter Challenge Announcement & Giveaway

We are starting WEEK 5 in our James Study! Last week we talked about how we are not to show favoritism but rather to love our neighbors as ourselves. As Christians, we are called to extend mercy instead of judgment. This week we are going to learn how our faith needs to be accompanied with ACTION. I can’t wait to get started!

Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

-James 2:15-17-

(Note: if you are viewing this through your email, make sure to go to our blog today because this post includes a video.)

Week 5 Challenge: The challenge for this week is to decide as a group how you want to put James 2:17 into action. Report back on Friday, commenting on Courtney’s post how your group is planning on participating in this challenge. This is a team effort! Big or small, we all make a difference for these girls TOGETHER!

You have from now until April 15th to do this GMG group challenge. Once your group has done the challenge, I’d like for you to either make a video that we can share on our GMG site or have someone in the group send an email to me at lovegodgreatly@gmail.com telling me how as a group you put God’s Words into action by helping the Mercy House. If you could attach a picture to the email that would be SUPER! I will then start sharing the videos and emails on our GMG as they come in!

This challenge begins today, and ends Friday, April 15th.

The Mercy House Mission Statement:

The Mercy House exists to provide alternative options for pregnant girls living in the streets of Kenya. The Mercy House will aid them in nutrition, housing, prenatal care, counseling, Biblical teaching and job skills for sustainable living.

The Mercy House has approved 501c3 status.

Who Is Behind The Mercy House?

Kristen Welch
The blogger behind The Mercy House and We Are THAT Family, traveled to Kenya, Africa, in March of 2010 with Compassion International, the world’s largest child sponsorship program, to blog their relief efforts in the slums of Nairobi. She was especially burdened visiting the Mathare Valley, one of Africa’s largest slums. Just days after returning home, Kristen read a heartbreaking article by CNN about the large number of backstreet abortions by girls forced into prostitution to feed their families.

Maureen Owino
While in Kenya, Kristen met Maureen, one of Compassion’s leadership students, a former sponsored child. Maureen is single, 25 years old and will graduate from the University of Nairobi in December 2010. She speaks 5 languages and traveled to the Unites States in the summer of 2010 on behalf of Compassion International to speak to thousands of students at Student Life Camps. Her moving life story led to the sponsorship of more than a thousand impoverished children.

She has since become a very dear friend of the Welch family. Just weeks after returning from Africa, Kristen emailed Maureen and asked if she knew of any ministries reaching out or offering an alternative to the young girls having backstreet abortions. She didn’t know of any. Both women began to pray about this need and 4 months later the dream of a Mercy House for these girls was birthed.

If you’d like to hear Maureen’s powerful testimony of how she was rescued from poverty, please click here.

Ways we can help:

Pray-most importantly please pray for these women as God lays them upon your heart. Pray for their protection, for God’s wisdom as they make important decisions pertaining to The Mercy House and the girls that God will send.

Shop- purchase The Mercy House t-shirts, necklaces or shop their Etsy store! (all the proceeds go to help support the Mercy House)

Donate- if you are a crafty person or if you already sell your own items on Etsy you might want to consider donating items for their Etsy store. They are taking ongoing or one-time donations to their Etsy store. Not only will your donation(s) benefit the work of the Mercy House in Kenya, it will also bring your store/site some added exposure. For more information click here.

Give-as a group or individually, you can choose to give a one time donation, monthly donations or purchase specific items for the house like beds, mattresses, a refrigerator, tables & chairs, sewing machines etc. To find out more ways to give click here.

Participate in monthly collection drives for the months of February, March & April. This month they are collecting the following items: To find out more about the monthly collection drives click here.

  1. I found your website about 3 weeks ago. The concept of S.O.A.P and the journal has benefited me greatly. It helped me to get back in the bible, something I have neglected over the past several months. I have also found your blog and the blogs that are attached extremely enlightening. I have looked over your website and can’t seem to find exactly how to join a group. I probably just overlooking it. I have a facebook page but I don’t do much with it and I don’t have a twitter account. I prefer to just email if it’s possible. So maybe you could steer me in the right direction for that and keep up the good work. This is an incredible ministry you have started here.

  2. I think this is a great idea Angela! :)

  3. WOW! Mercy House is definitely not only in my thoughts, but in my prayers as well! My favorite quote at the end was “I cried out to God and shook my fist, Why do you allow so much suffering? Why?” He asked me the same question.’ That is such a powerful statement and has really made me think. I will get together with my other Girlfriends in God and decide what we will do. Thank you for this great study. It has brought me so much closer to God. God Bless!

  4. Hi Angela!
I’d love to enter your giveaway!!!

Our group is online only (so sad that I can meet them all face to face!!!!), but I just emailed this link to them and we’ll be talking about and praying about how to help.

Thank you so much for this challenge!! WONDERFUL idea!!!

    His,
    Shari

I can’t wait to get together with my GMG group and decide on a project. We are a crafty group so who knows what we will come up with.

  7. Angela,

This is something God has been putting on my heart a lot lately: our obligation to those less fortunate. The James study has solidified that point with me. I am so excited to see what we as a group can do for this precious organization!

Thank you for your willingness to follow God’s leading!

  8. Thank you for your video this morning, I will be sharing it with our GMG group to see what we can come up with. Please enter me in the giveaway also, I’ll be checking out their Etsy store also!!

  9. Thank you for your video this morning, I will be sharing it with my GMG group today to see what we can come up with. I’ll also check out their Etsy store!! Please enter me for the giveaway :)

  10. Girls, I am deeply moved by your FAITH IN ACTION. You are living James and being DOERS! Your gifts-large and small-will have a great impact. On behalf of Mercy House and Maureen, thank you so much!

  11. I used to work at a large church in Louisville, Kentucky. I was gifted with a framed quote for assisting on a particular project. The quote seems particularly applicable for our challenge with the Mercy House:

I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do
    - Edmund Everett Hale

Bless you ladies! We can make a difference, no matter how small it seems.

  12. Brenda Larsen says:

I am so excited to participate in your challenge to support the women of Kenya. I will be donating $50 in honor of my friend who is turning 50 this week. She has such a heart for single moms in our community that I know she will be blessed by this donation to Mercy House. I praise God for your ministry.

  13. Love The Mercy House! What a great cause!

  14. I’m so excited about this challenge. My mind was whirling how I could help and also get my group involved. What a great ministry and wow, won’t we impact in a profound way with ALL of our GMG groups!

  15. Thank you so much for what you said about mercy, faith, and putting our actions to work!! I am reminded, with God all things are possible! I will definitely be praying for the Mercy House in Kenya!!

  16. My mother is a member of my GMG group and is such an inspiration to me that I wanted to share it will all of you. Since James is about putting Gods word into action I figured you might like to read about how she is doing just that. Check out her Blog to see how she is serving the Native Americans on the Pine Ridge Indian. Reservation. http://nanaporcupin.blogspot.com/

Let us always remember that we serve/do good works in response to what Christ did for us.

  25. Thank you for this challenge! I read the passage from James this morning and asked myself how I can get better about putting my faith into action so this is an answer to prayer. One easy suggestion for everybody on facebook is put the link for Mercy House on your page. Hopefully that will raise some awareness.

  26. Thank you to each of you for your sweet comments and even sweeter hearts! I’m really excited to see how God is going to use the Good Morning Girls to bless The Mercy House. You are all so right, EVERY little bit helps! So excited and honored to be apart of this with you all!

  28. Michelle C says:

Just wanted to say thanks for the work you put in this. I try to put this into action locally in my church and neighbourhood. Bringing bags of groceries where needed or bring the gift of time to someone who just needs to know someone cares.

  29. I have been on missions to Africa 5 times, 3 of those to Kenya. My heart is for these people, men, women and children! I have a passion for youth, a desire to further my education in nursing/delivery and have a background in adolescent sexuality. There are so many aspects of this ministry that touch me deeply. I will be praying and commenting with our group about what we can do “now.” maybe someday I can visit to serve these girls! God is good! Mungu ni mwema!

  30. I have a friend who travels Africa frequently trying to come up with ideas to help Mercy House as well. :)

  31. Thanks for the great vlog this morning, Angela. Our group will be discussing this through our emails since we all don’t live near one another. We will be praying for this ministry as well.

  32. This is great! My mom is a labor & delivery nurse at a large hospital near where I live, and I can’t wait to see if she has any ideas on how they might could help. Thanks for all you do!

  33. Thank you for another great challenge. Our group loves this. We are blessed to have our GMG group and we are all following the James study.

  34. I will pray. I have been hugely blessed by being a part of GMG!

  35. This is so great Angela!!! I don’t know if my group will be doing anything…but as an individual I will. I am not sure what yet…but I will pray about it and try and figure out what I can do. I am also going to pass this along to my dad who is a Pastor so he can hear about Mercy House. Maybe his church can get involved? I don’t think he ever has heard of it. I know I haven’t. I will have to call him. Like I said – this is wonderful. Your video’s always make my week.

  36. I love your idea of supporting the Mercy House. The James study is changing my life and for that I am grateful. I will definitely check out their etsy store and would like to try and find something that I can do to help in this effort.

  43. Angela,
I found both your and Courtney’s website by mistake actually (not really a mistake as I feel the Lord led me there:)) I am so blessed by your teachings, the James study, and your dedication to helping us busy Moms, daughters, sisters etc. I started the James study late…to late to get a group of GMG together. I am technically doing this study alone without a group but feel I am doing this with so many others because of your posts etc. :) Please know that I will pray about how I can help with the Mercy House even if it is just sending prayers up to our All Mighty God that can change things in an instant because of our uplifted prayers…if it is His Mighty Will. :) Thanks again for your ministry and PLEASE enter me in to win one of those COOL T-Shirts. :)
Was blessed by you two today. :)
    Linda

  44. Angela and Courtney,

I want to say thank you so very much for following God and sharing your journey with us. I was wallowing in self-pity yesterday and today, sitting in my pit and NOT wanting to get out.

I traveled over to Lysa TerKeurst’s blog and read something that snapped me out if it. I started to crawl out… then I kept reading. I went back to the words that you both wrote on my blog a few weeks ago and I kept crawling. Out, out, out of that pit. Away from Satan and the sin he wants to keep my chained to. Then I came here and watched both video’s again. There it is, the ground on which I can stand… God’s foundation!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you so much for following God, standing up to sin, and encouraging other Christian women. You are both Godly gifts!

    Becca
