James 3:1-12 ~ Taming The Tongue

This week’s study in James chapter 3 was hard for me. It really points out so many flaws that I have. I am a woman of many words and Proverbs 10:19 says “When words are many, sin is not absent. But he who holds his tongue is wise.”

James 3 says that NO man can tame the tongue. It is filled with deadly poison.

I long to be a woman who is filled with life giving words. Who is filled with grace and mercy. But the reality is – I stumble in many ways (3:2). And when I stumble, it brings pain to others and to my own soul. I long to be free of this problem in my life – to be so full of wisdom and self-control that I never ever stumble again!

But let me be honest, I have stumbled in my own GMG group. Last summer I had to send an apology email to the entire group. SO embarrassing! I urge you to be very careful with your words in your groups. Pray before you send your emails that God would show you if anything in your email could hurt another. Filter your words with love and grace. Be forgiving (as my girls were) when one of the girls acts immaturely. Pursue unity.

I made a video last summer about this very passage of James and included my children. Let’s teach our children while they are young the power of words. It will save them a lot of heartache and produce a generation of children who are world changers for Jesus!

LOVE IT! love the illustration – will be doing that with my kiddo’s – and love how Lexie ends with your words….anyone would think she’s heard them once or twice before?… ;-)

Looking forward to another week of sharing with the girls that God has brought together – we are already committing and looking forward to further seasons of GMG together! :-)

*Loved* the illustration. My oldest daughter is four, and this will be perfect to share with her. I posted a blog this week about leaving a legacy for our children, and this totally supports that our actions are meaningful- and the number one source from which our children learn. Oh, and you’re children are adorable:).

  4. That is so precious! Your kids are getting a great teaching from God’s word and they understand it so young! Thanks for the illustration. I will keep that in mind when my kids are older.

  5. Courtney you have so much wisdom! I loved this idea and your children are so adorable. I’d love to try it out on my four year old daughter. She’s always coming home from preschool with tales of all the naughty things the other children do .. I’m pretty sure she’s not totally innocent herself ;-)

Thank you for such great inspiration!

Love & Blessings to you and your family. Have a great weekend!

    Hi GMG!!

I LOVE your stuff! I was introduced to the Proverbs 31 study by a friend of mine and have loved it! I’ve been doing it by myself but would love to be able to interact on the next one. I feel I will get more out of it. However, Proverbs 31 has completely changed my life! I am actually HAPPY now to stay home and take care of my family. I have never felt so free or happy. Praise God for that!!

Is there anyway I could get a copy of the reading plans for the other Bible studies you have listed on your website? (For example James and Ephesians)

Thanks so much for blessing my life! You are so amazing and I thank God for your resources of strength everyday.

    Love and Blessings,

    Brooke

  8. Love the illustration I will teach my daughter.

  9. Fantastic illustrations!! Even a great reminder for adults – they can be just as bad as children these days!! haha!! Great discussion for women as they involve themselves in gossip, slander, etc… gets themselves into real trouble. I feel like reading James again now!! :)
