“The first duty of love is to listen.”- Paul Tillich

Week 3 Challenge: This week we are going to focus on putting verse 19 into action in our lives. As you interact with your families and friends, focus on being quicker to listen, slower to speak and slower to become angry.

If you are following along with us in James don’t forget to download this week’s S.O.A.P. print-out. This week, we are reading James 1:19-27.

  1. Congratulations, Angela and family!
Thank you for this extremely important challenge… a tricky one for all of us, like you said. I think I need to work on all three areas (listening, speaking, slow to anger) equally, not one comes naturally for me. :)
Your leadership has made a wonderful difference in my life and the lives of 12 other GMG here in Oregon! Thank you!

    Hi Angela!

Congrats on your pregnancy! I’ve had five myself.. each one was a little different and the last, four years ago, I honestly thought was a boy myself, it felt so different. However, God in His infinite wisdom has only blessed me with girls! Regardless of what your babe turns out to be, Praise God for the blessing he is giving to you and your husband! I empathise with how you’re feeling, I pretty much lay around and did nothing because I felt sick and exhausted all the time (of course I was practically an old lady by then.. 38 lol!) I’ll be praying for your safe delivery and for God to give you the strength to bear all that you have to in the coming months. May God bless you abundantly!

    With all my good wishes
    Lisa

  3. The cat’s out of the bag – wooohooo!!! I’m so excited for you!!! I just love hearing and seeing you!!! And oh yes, what a challenge it is to apply verses 19 and 20!!!
    Love you,
    Courtney

  4. Congratulations Angela! And thanks for the video today. We have all heard the saying that God gave us two ears and only one mouth for a reason.
    Keep up the good work!

  5. Thanks everyone for your sweet comments! :)

Yes, Lisa Maria- my husband and I don’t care what we are having either. It’s just exciting to see what God has planned for our family. :) I would LOVE to have 3 girls, but then 2 girls and a boy would be WONDERFUL too! :) We’ll see in about 8-10 weeks! My husband hates surprises so we always find out what we’re having. :)

Because I’ve been soooooo much sicker this time around, all my friends out here are teasing me and telling me it’s a boy…..we are a little bit “girly” around here so they love the idea of a boy being added to the family. :) To be honest with you, I always thought I’d have boys…I’ve very close to my brother and nephew- who is like a son to me.

I’ll keep you all posted! :)

    Love,

    Angela

  6. Congratulations, Angela!

Boy, these verses are challenging for me! I’ve actually printed it out and I’m contemplating it the entire day. I think it will take the whole day to do my printout! :P

Anyone have ideas on how I can be “slow to speak”? I’ve always felt like I need to blurt out what I think to set everyone straight! *roll eyes*

    Thanks again!

  7. YAY!! How exciting! I pray God’s grace through this pregnancy, and good health for your precious little one growing more and more each day! I LOVED being pregnant! I had 3 rough pregnancies, and one smooth one, but I loved them all. There’s no feeling like growing a life inside of you! :) I was blessed with 2 boys, 2 girls. I love having both! I pray God will allow that for you, if it’s His will! My SIL has 5 girls and one on the way! Aaaahh!!!

Thank you for this challenge. As a mother of 4, I struggle greatly with this challenge. Sometimes you feel like you have to get angry and loud just to be heard above everything else. That will never set the example for how I want my children to behave, and react to others though. This has been on my heart for a while now, and reading these verses, and hearing the challenge…God is saying, “now’s the time to really act upon it!” I pray for His strength, and I submit this plea to Him, as I know He is greatest in my weakness!

    Blessings to you, Angela!

  8. Alison- I am going to try a new idea, for just that…I am going to make it a point to count to 5 before I speak in reaction to anyone. Just enough time, to let the Holy Spirit guide my words, and make myself aware that what I am about to say cannot be taken back! I struggle with it too. I react quickly, and harshly sometimes. Meekness is one of the fruits of the Spirit, that I need to really focus on!

  9. I am an RA at the girl’s college I go to in Raleigh, NC. I like to write encouraging verses on the white board outside of my room. Today I put up James 1:19. What a great verse to live out!

  10. Congratulations on the baby on the way!

    blessings & giggles

  11. Hi I have a question, what is applications? S.O.A.P says to write down 1 or 2 applications from passage…what does that mean? Aren’t observations and applications the same thing?

  12. Oh and congrats on your pregnancy :) btw.

  13. Hi Alison, Kristi, Clair, Jeanie & Tina:

Thanks for all your sweet comments and great suggestions and questions.

Kristi- You are so right, God is greatest in our weaknesses! Love that about Him! :) You had a great suggestion for Alison too! Whenever you can wait, pray and allow the Holy Spirit to have time to work in you before you respond is always a good thing. Once our angry words are out we can never get them back…..learning to be quick to listen is such an important skill to learn.

Clair- what a great verse for your girls to learn early in life!!! That verse if they can empress it upon their hearts, will help them in all their future relationships…..especially in marriage. :)Thanks for being such a great leader to them!

    Jeanie- thanks!!! :)

Tina- great question!!! I think I might do a post on this so I can have some examples for you. How about I post about it on Wednesday with our link-up! :)

    Love God Greatly!
    -Angela

  14. Thanks for this reminder! I read this yesterday, but how quickly we forget. (And yet God is so patient with us!) I was not very victorious with this “Q-S-S” last night.
    {Q-S-S is the little reminder to myself. Q-Quick to listen, S-SLLOOOWW to speak, S-SSLLOOWW to become angry.}
Don’t you think that fatigue can cause us to abandon our godly actions?!? Sometimes we can’t help being tired–but we DO have a choice if we are going to be “snappy” or not–but sometimes we CAN take steps to not GET tired…such as eating wholesome foods for more energy, not trying to “fit in” too much in my schedule, keeping a consistent sleep habit (and for me, not to stay up late blog-surfing using it as an excuse for “Mommy’s downtime”–OUCH!)
I’m so thankful when we come to confess and repent, God forgives and gives us second chances!
Thanks for the Q-S-S challenge this week–Victory only in God’s strength!
    ♥ Kim A.

  15. And OH! CONGRATULATIONS!!! :)

  20. Melissa P says:

First congratulations Mom! I’m hoping for a boy to help keep the girls in check. I’m usually for team girls but sounds like you need a junior. Thanks for this weeks challenge and as our group studies Ruth, this challenge goes great with what we are studying as well. Being quick to listen and just being obediant to the Lord and what he has for our lives. Have a great week and press through all the sickness.

  21. Angela -Thank you! That would be so helpful!!! I am really confused about how gmg works! lol…maybe explaining this will lead me in the right direction!

    God Bless!

    -Tina

PS: I have a suggestion: Could you all maybe have like special guests in your video posts..that would be neat…and maybe add some worship in song or something? I don’t know! Love yall!

  22. Congratulations Angela! Great advice coming out of God’s word too…I really needed it today! Love, Janelle
